Hello,
the latest version from the play store and also the beta version of oruxmaps crashes by zooming in on my new Moto E (2nd Generation), Android 5.0.2.
This happens with all map-files, even with the small world-map.
Version 5.5.22 works fine. But I'd rather use the new version...
What can I do?
Thank you,
Jörg

Thanks;
It is strange because this bug is not sent to the bug trace log.
Please, try this version-->//http://oruxmaps.com/OruxMaps6.4.0beta8b.apk
Reproduce the bug, then you should find some files with name '6.4.0beta8-xxxxx.stacktrace' in the internal storage oruxmaps/tracklogs/ folder.
Please, send me the files-->oruxuro@gmail.com

Hi.
I'm on Moto Maxx BR (US Droid Turbo) and got the exact same issue. I did what you explained, but there no file xxx.stracktrace in /tracklogs. What to do next?
Another info: both methods of zooming produce the bugs (volume buttons and pinch). If i make a slow pinch move, it doesn't force close... Weird...
Thanks.

Hello,
I've tried this version when I was hiking today. I have the same problem, but there is not such a file in the in the tracklogs-folder.
Sometime zooming works, but often not. Then Oruxmaps crashes and then there is no message box or confirmation. Then I have to restart Oruxmaps.
I thought, I don't have this problem with version 5.5.22, but now it's the same.

Hello;
It is a really strange bug, because it doesn't report any trace.
May be a JNI bug, not managed by the Java stack.
The problem is that I can not catch it without a trace.
I need someone with a rooted device, who can get and send me a logcat trace.
orux
Hello orux,
now I've rooted my device and logged a logcat trace. I've sent you the log-file by e-mail.
I hope, you can use this file.
Thanks,

The problem persist.
I've tried 6.4.0beta8 and the app still closing during the zoom.
I will search the log file and send by email.
Thanks.
Hello Jose,
I've tried several different values in settings--maps--zoom settings (I think almost all) and it dosen't get better.
It happens with pinch to zoom and with key buttons. Sometimes the app crahes only in high zoom levels (16 or 17 or higher, 200 % or 400 %), and sometimes it crashes at any zoom level. Zooming out most works, but not always.
Thanks and greetings
Jörg
I've just registered to the forum, for exactly the same problem.
Moto E2, Lollipop, maps form different sources and online and it crashes always when zooming. Crashing means that the app disappears from screen.
When opened again it shows the last working map.
I've tried nearly all settings combinations (zoom digital, autoload on/off etc.), nothing works. It's a new Moto, so I haven't rooted it yet.
Any idea?
Edit: double post - deleted
Hello,
I've found a workaround: when the map is rotated (with 2 fingers gesture), then zooming works!
It doesn't matter, how much I rotate the map. A bit is already enough.
But as soon as I turn the map to the normal view (without rotation, north on top), the app crashes again by zooming.
Not a really good workaround, but better then permanently crashing... And I can use my favorite app again :)
Maybe this issue helps to find a real solution for the zooming-problem?
Thanks and best wishes

Thanks;
It may help.
It is a problem inside an android native library; it is very difficult to trace/debug, because the platform doesn't provide debug information.

Thanks - it works.
Although a real solution would be nice ...
I have the same issue with a moto maxx.
What I realized is, when I am lucky and I turn the card with 2 fingers for some degree, than zooming
is possible. When I put to 1:1 than the issue happen again. Try to zoom with fingers or + button.
Program quits with no error message.
I tried all versions beta/store ....
I have a Samsung S6, also with Android 5.02 and it works fine.

No deberias tener problema

Vaya. Pues desinstalé la original. En cualquier caso, la beta c arregla el problema, aunque no siempre.

I have found a solution for my Moto E 2015. With Lollypop 5.1 zooming works. Unfortunately, Motorola offers not update in Europe (so far only in the US).
I've been using this german manual for updating to 5.1. The bootloader must be unlocked for it. Worked fine.

I'm sure, there are also english manuals for this update.

Also for me the same problem: Moto G, Version APK 6.0.5 of Oruxmaps.
Luckily, when I installed Android 5.1 Lollipop the problem disappeared.
Strongly unluckily, several days ago the phone build updated to Android Marshmallow 6.0 and the problem is there over again, damn !!! Please, solve it.
Yes, I have just upgraded to Android 6 on Motorola MotoG (3rd gen) and have exactly the same problem.Zooming with buttons or finger causes Oruxmaps to crash. Sometimes it will zoom up once on the button but crashes on the second press. This occurs with both the production version and the beta at http://www.oruxmaps.com/OruxMaps6.5.4beta4c.apk (but About says version 6.5.0).
I've just done some further checks and the problem only seems to apply to offline maps; the OS Street View 1:10000 (UK) seems to zooming okay.
I knew upgrading the Android 6 wasn't a good idea!!!
A solution would be most welcome.

Yes, that seems to have solved the problem. That's really great.
Incidentally the zooming worked perfectly on my Moto G (3rd gen) with Android 5. (5.0.2, I think).
Since I switched to Android 6, I've also noted another issue possibly related to zoom. On my largest map by file size which is a multi-scale set, when I select the 1:25,000 map set it opens the 1:50,000 map if it has previously been set below the 1:25,000 scale although the label that appears briefly indicates it should be the 1:25,000 map. A click on the + zoom button then brings up the 1:25,000 map. This wasn't happening on Android 5. Not much of a problem to me but strange.
Thanks for your help.
Hi there.
I can confirm that 6.5.4betab is working well on Moto Maxx BR on Android 5.0.2. I'll wait the update in donate version.
Thank you very much
Hi,
thanks a lot, it's not crashing anymore on Moto E 2nd gen (5.0.2).
However, the zoom +/- buttons don't work (zoom only digitally), correct zooming only works fingers.
MAYBE I have a wrong setting somewhere deep in the options left over from trying anything to get it working. :)
Does this beta expire? I used the oruxmaps sea which worked great but expired some time ago.
Just downloaded and installed 6.5.4beta8 can confirm that the zoom bug is fixed with workaround in zoom settings.
Android 6.0 Motorola G2 XT1068.
Thanks for your efforts well done.

No, this solution does not not work for me and the app still always crashes when zooming.
The only workaround I found (a bit lousy, however) is to manually rotate the map and coming back with the orientation (but not exactly aligning as a startup, otherwise the workaround does not work). In that case, you can zoom whenever and whatever you want and the app never crashes.
Again, pay attention that the problem is with both Motorola MotoG and Android Marshmallow 6.0, not with 5.0.x.
Please, solve it. Many thanks.

Sorry: I was not testing the beta version (and relevant "bug checkbox") because I did not understand that the app installed in a separate environment, called "oruxmapsbeta". Thus, actually I was still being testing the standard 6.5.0 version by launching it from the usual desktop view of my phone.
I just realize that of late, when you asked to me yesterday whether the "bug checkbox" was actually checked and I was not really able to find out it. At that point I had a look inside the installed apps and I found out (not in the desktop view but in the installed app view) that another app called "oruxmapsbeta" was really installed.
I then duplicated the environment, including DEMs, Offline Maps and the like and now I can confirm that the app does not crash anymore by zooming even though you do not rotate the map at the beginning.
Very good achievement.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
I also have this same problem
It occurs only in vector maps .

Wait a minute ;)
I need to know what happens!
I think it is a problem with the new mapsforge libraries. But I am not receiving information about the crashes; may be it is a native problem.
Are you using those maps?
orux
Sorry Orux, of course you are right. My wish to roll back came from the fact that I'm leaving very soon for a hiking/biking vacation in Crete...
I'm using OpenAndroMaps and the Elevate theme. After a few more experiments, I found:
(1) Crashes occur less often when using the default mapsforge theme or the Tiramisu theme compared to the Elevate theme.
(2) It could be a performance problem: Map display buildup takes by factors longer than with 6.5.0., regardless of which theme I'm using.
I am most willing to run additional tests which may help to isolate the root cause of the problem.
Regards, Markus

Hello Orux
Galaxy S5 mini with Android 4.4.2
The following is offered just for the record
I today updated via Playstore from ver 6.5.0 to ver 6.5.5 and immediately had problems with Orux showing "Unfortunately Orux has stopped etc" Map was OpenAndroMap Feb 2015 with Elevate theme Tried to start app again and managed to get map display but slow rendering and when panned map got a crash Tried old OAM (Aug2015) (still Mapsforge 0.3?) and got fast rendering but crashed on zoom Tried Garmin .img map and this seemed to be OK for the few minutes I used it
Previous ver 6.5.0 was good
Then uninstalled 6.5.5 and installed 6.5.6 from your link This seems OK for the short time I have used it (5 min max)
Typically how many different devices do your developers use to test a new release (the actual new version without any last tweaks) before you release to Playstore?
Thanks
Hello Orux
Thanks for 6.5.6. No more crashes on my S3. Rendering still 3-5 times slower than it was in 6.5.0. Will use 6.5.6 during my upcoming vacation and report any new findings.
Markus
Lower zoom levels are really slow. Level 14 maybe 35seconds. But caching helps.
Elevate version 2 is faster, but not as it was.

There are +10000 different devices, each one with a different android implementation. For example, the app can run in all Android 4.3 devices except in two Motorola devices, because they use a different library...

Yes, it's a lot slower than 6.5.4 beta 10. When zooming out the level below is first rendered at 50% zoom (and 4th times the tiles), then the current zoom level. Skipping the first step should speed it up again.

Hello;
I need to know where is the problem with the new mapsforge libraries, and android 4.x devices. It is a native bug, because of that, there aren't traces about it.
Unfortunately I don't have a phone with that version of android, in emulator, there are no problems.
The new libraries are multithreaded; maybe that's the problem.
Someone with a phone that stops with zoom can try this beta version, which uses the new libraries but only uses a thread?

thanks,

Hi Orux,
Thanks for all your efforts to solve this nasty problem. Here is my feedback:
Samsung Galaxy S3, GT-I9300, Android 4.3.
6.5.0: Everything ok
6.5.5: Crash on every zoom or pan
6.5.6 beta 1, beta 3: No more crashes, but rendering of new map tiles is slow.
I can live with 6.5.6 beta 3. Maybe I should add a new phone to my next XMAS wish list...

You're right, multithreading in mapsforge is still experimental and limited to one thread for stability reasons:

Beta3 works well for me (but I didn't have crashes anyway), tweak mapsforge theme is fixed also with mapsforge 0.6 now.
I've a Motorola Moto G 2015 16GB Android 6.0
I'm using the OAM with the style Elevate 3
I solved the crash problem zoom, put the flag option.
the 6.5.6 version, runs fairly well, could be better.
Instead, the version 6.5.6 beta 3 is still sometimes a load slow rendering, in new areas of the map
Oruxmaps 7.0.12

Android 7.0
I can scroll without problems but for maximum scale of 20m or less, when moving the card around, refresh gets very slow
if I load a track and move the card around with that track and a waypoint being visible and scale 20m or less, the refresh is even slower, and the app regularly freezes. Scale 1m amd moving around makes it die soon especially if I try to move it again before the display is fully refreshed.
Maybe there is a connection. Why does moving the map get slower for scales 20m or less? There is less info to be displayed, so I would expect it to be faster. Maybe this and the reason for the crash are the same.
So for me a simple solution would be to disable extreme zoom factors with scales lower than 20m. Maybe faster phones would allow them.
Can oruxmaps start the refresh of the map before the previous refresh is finished? Maybe this is a problem? It somehow smells like it is.
One more question: I know I read somewhere about a flag to be set for zooming problems but I cannot find it anywhere anymore.
Hi,
I use this app ver. 7.3.2 at latest days and I have the same issues, crash when zoom into the map. I have set into the app settings the option for map crash, but the problem continuous
This is happening after I change
- map file
- theme to the map
- settings to the theme of a map
- settings to app
also at
- random conditions
my device is
www.gsmarena.com/oneplus_5t-8912.php
1+ 5T (A5010)
android 8.1 no root
there is no sim inside the smartphone. It is to airplane mode and using ONLY for navigation purpose. Every month, when there is firmware update, I make hard reset. So there is new clean install to the GNSS apps
also latest version 7.3.4 after clean install continues to crash when zooming in
Hi,
after some months, testing osm maps into V4 (also into V5) format, i haven't seen any crash into orux app (also with locus). It seems the old style V3 map compression was incompatible with some devices, like mine.
I am having the same problem and I do not want to loose today's half recorded track but cannot start the app?
I have version 7.0.10
Please help
