Here is some new testing material. I developed a new variation called "Elements" for the new maps of sparsely populated/mapped areas . All elements of the other variations are shown, hiking and cycling routes, as well as showing everything as soon as possible. I densely mapped areas this variation is not very usuable, it's slow and unclear.

Here are the downloads and the whole changelog:

I finally gave in and included MTB scale in Elevelo. For better rendering of place names I limited all POI symbols to zoom 14 and larger, and introduced small POI markers for zoom 13 and 12. Some other small changes too.

Here are some test versions, feedback is very welcome:

I browsed around a bit with Elevelo. I think the colour scheme for downhill works well enough once you understand it. It stands out and it's very visible. OTOH I'm not a fan of the transversal lines used for uphill. Especially at lower zoom levels it becomes easily unreadable unless the path is really straight. I don't really have an alternate solution to offer, the ideal thing would be to use linesymbols, but in practice they are basically broken. For the moment being I'm using coloured dots. I don't really like that solution either, but it seems to me that it's less prone to get mangled in proximity of corners (it still suffers when a dot falls close to a tile's edge).

Hi Maki,

thanks for your feedback.

You're right, the lines for uphill are not ideal, but as several users wanted to have the original OAM MTB tags included seem to have been satisfied by it. I didn't give a different solution much thought - you have probably :-) - and as you know there are limits to what can be displayed at the same time.

As I have just looked at your colored dots I just got a different idea...

The new version 2.2.0 is released, which has some improvements especially concerning place name rendering and for mountain bike usuage:

2.2.0 01/06/14

- optimized rendering at zoom 12 and 13 for place names

- limited poi symbols to zoom 14 and larger and added low zoom markers (zoom 12+13) for important pois

- included MTB-scale in Elevelo (not in Elements because of sac_scale)

- added symbol for farmyard, archaeological_site, wayside_shrine, tundra

- removed green overlay for protected areas at lower zooms

- changed priority for camp_sites/caravan_sites, rendering for landfill, contour lines at lower zooms, rendering of surface

eartrumpet

Once again a small update:

2.2.1 19/06/14

- removed leisure=park from protected areas, wrong rendering of motorway_junction numbers at Zoom 19+

- added ways for towers, oneway=-1, ferry_terminal, defibrillator

- changed trail_visibility value combinations

eartrumpet

New update:

2.2.2 05/08/14

- changed file/folder names so that it's easier to guess the use of the theme (added hiking/cycling/city/backcountry)

- added sport=climbing, seperate symbol for emergency=phone, circles to hiking/cycling nodes

- made surface coloring more visible

- reduced generator:source to the more visible ones

There's now an optimized PDF file containing the map key available in the downloads section:

hi everybody

in my samsung note 2 doesn't work.I follow the istruction but i always see a black screen.i try whit elevate,e L and e XL.

any advice?

eartrumpet

It's important that you unzip the whole zip file in your mapstyles folder. You get a black screen if some of the resources are missing, this means either the whole ele_res folder, or some of the files in it.

It's always best to directly move the zip file into the mapstyles folder within android, and unzip it there completely. I use ES Explorer for that.

Just follow those instructions step by step:
