Title: Straight lines. GPS stops recording. [Líneas rectas. El GPS deja de grabar]

Some tips about that problem. How to configure your android to allow an app could bypass power saving settings:

Go to global settings-->sensors-->GPS-->and check FUSED LOCATIONS PROVIDER.

The tips about disabling battery optimization do not appear to be the answer.  I have tried this on several nexus 5x and nexus 6p devices.  Disabling battery optimization solved the tracking problem in locus but not oruxmaps.  I use both as each have some features I like.   I'm not sure why oruxmaps is not able to keep tracking in the last few releases.

I have also tried adjusting the frequency of the GPS in the sensor settings but that does not appear to help either.

Oruxmaps is one of my most used apps and I applaud the work behind it.  Here's to hoping that the tracking issue is solved soon.

It's a bit frustrating to work on android with power saving settings!

After version 6.0, it seems to work on some phones and not on others. It's annoying!

I will downgrade the level of sdk, to see if in the latest version there are new things.

We will try several things.

Hi Orux,

i tried yesterday your latest version.

At first i really thought wow, it's working.

But after 3:58 hours it was killed.

I did another try and after 4:05 hours it was again killed.

So I can confirm that it seems to last a lot longer now, around 4 hours.

All other versions last betwen 20 minutes and 2 hours...

I will try this version again in the next days...

THX again for your effort...

Thanks;

What do you mean with 'killed'?

1.-The app stops recording the track, but restarts automatically when you turn on the display again.

2.-The app is killed, you have to start recording the track manually.

Do you have enabled that setting?-->global settings-->TTS/voice messages-->GPS failure alarm

I'm facing a similar problem while recording a track with the screen off using Mapsforge maps. It happens that GPS freeze and no more points are added to the track after more than an hour of successfull recording, V7.1.0 with an Alcatel 6045Y MM (6.0.1). This problem has never happened if the screen is on; but a long time ago while recording a track, the map freezed always in the same location, that problem was solved by performing a clear cache vectorial.

No battery optimization and full permisssions has Oruxmaps, i'll try latest rc version posted //http://www.oruxmaps.com/foro/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4527#p11973 and give feedback.

Is there any option to create a log of Oruxmaps without taking place a force close?

Hello Orux,

maybe i remember wrong, but the first time

i think i had to manually restart Orux and then it does the straight line.

The second time i was wondering, because wenn i opened my mobile,

Orux was closed but it started then automatically and does the straight line.

Now i enabled the GPS failure alarm. This seems to work, i will try that further these days...

best regards,

I have tried the lastest version and it is still not able to keep tracking.   I am using a Nexus 6p running Android 8.   I have it set to not optimize oruxmaps.   It appears to track for a short time and then keeps recording the track but not tracking with the GPS.  So the time of the track is correct but instead of showing where I went, it draws straight lines connecting a few points.

Outdated: [After clearing caches of maps, both stable and beta versions work correctly, for screen on and off scenarios.

A bit odd but it seems to be the cache my issue, I use notification for lose of GPS satellites and battery no optimization.]

I have made a further test after a route of almost 4 hours, after 1 hour of recording the smartphone lost the GPS with data network enabled (my Idol 3 5.5 only has GPS and A-GPS as navigation systems) and recovered the conexion around 15 minutes later. It has nothing to do with OruxMaps because I used another app called GPS Status to test why i had lost the connection with the satellites. GPS Status showed 24 satellites in view but 0 in use, while OruxMaps showed 1 satellite in use, ¿what's happening, smartphone or satellites issue?

A friend of mine who has a BQ M5 with GPS+A-GPS+GLONASS randomly has the same problem, as a result both of us have a straigth line in our recording track while the connection was lost.

hi friends

i have same problems since 21 august.

evening 21 august i ended cicling trip, no problem, but after closing trip records begins a continous ring of the phone and searching of AIS connection.  i was not able to stop phone rInging because i did not know what is AIS.  Ringing stopped after deinstallation of an application, but after newly rebegin when open  3BMETEO that connects with GPS. I needed to eliminate even 3BMETEO.

Day after i run ORUSMAPS 6.5 and rebegins ringing and searching AIS connection. i needed to eliminate even ORUXMAP to solve. but using application GPS  WAS NOT FUNCTIONING, only initial point was correct, but ther was no trace and no record of trip.

seems every time i ask application using GPS, the phone engages a search for AIS connection.( without my asking).

now have downloaded ORUXMAPS 7.1.2, have no trouble for AIS searching, but have same problem of previous version: when ask run register screen presents correct position but during trip the screen remains Always blocked till stop register. no trace is recorded.

today i tried with another application RUNTASTIC, and had same trouble, all seems functions well but during trip GPS point is blocked at initial point and no trace on screen.

strange that 2 application with same trouble.....

Google maps seems function well.

my device is  SAMSUNG GALAXY J7 (2016)

with ANDROID  6.0.1  version MMB29K.J710FXXU3AQF8

ORUXMAPS 7.1.2  and ORUXMAPS 6,5

already deactivated  energy saving

probably (but not sure) i received information to upgrade ANDROID of my phone. may be trouble begin after the upgrade?

problem solved on my galaxy j7

after demonstration that Android setting for GPS was ok and the best, but there was no GPS signal.

Compared with an old Samsung GT 1900  that was seeing perfectly GPS signals.

on galaxy j7 i open "SETTING"

open BACKUP AND REFRESH

run   REFRESH ALL SETTINGS to predefined values.

immediatly returned gps signal caption, and ORUXMAPS and other apk run perfectly.

congratulation to ORUX for the apk very good.

ciao

Hi there,

I just want to add, that I did not have this issue so far with Orux 7.0.17. The last few days I recorded several tracks from 3 to 5,5 hours on different devices. While recording, the longest constant time the device was stored in backpack (screen off, device locked) was about 4 hours on Android 6 and about 5,5 hours on Android 7.

Only did a short test with the latest Orux 7.1.2 on Android 6 though. Recorded 1,5 hours without problems.

I saw a similar behavior on Sony's stock Android with Stamina Mode (= advanced power saving feature) active. But here, Stamina Mode is causing this as it disables all GPS when screen is off, whether or not the app is set for battery optimization.

Tested with:

- Orux 7.0.17

- Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, Stock Android 6.0.1

- Sony Xperia SP, LineageOS Android 7.1.2

You are doing an excellent job with this app! I really appreciate your hard work.

Perhaps this will help someone who can try it and see if it works for them. I love OruxMaps and have supported it with donations. I don't use it often but rely on it when I do. I tend to update whenever one is offered. So I'm on 7.1.2 donate right now.

I started using a Google Pixel two weeks ago. I updated to Oreo (Android 8.0.0) when it became available a couple days ago. Then I needed OruxMaps for a hike yesterday. I found it was not recording my entire track but putting in straight segments in between my looking at the screen by waking up the phone, etc. while OM was running. So I came here looking for answers and see others have this problem even in earlier versions of Android.

I have tried changing settings in Oreo to allow OM to access the GPS (location permission is ON). I've got it set "app can run in the background when not in use". I have NOT turned on or run "battery optimized" OM, which I think means it can use the battery as it wants to. None of this makes a difference. Nor did turning on the app, GPS Status, which I thought might keep the GPS on (there's a setting "Use GPS when screen is off"...makes no difference.)

What DID seem to make OruxMaps work to continuously record a track when I tested today, was having an app called Avenza Maps also running a track at the same time. Avenza Maps is an app (free, with purchase options) for using PDF maps which I am required to use for an organization I work with. I prefer OruxMaps of course (and am trying to figure out how to use PDF maps with it, but haven't got that done yet).

I repeatedly turned on tracking in Avenza Maps, then turned it off. When it was off, OruxMaps did not record all of my movement (driving down a road). When Avenza Maps tracking was turned on, OruxMaps would then record my track continuously, even if my screen was turned off, if I launched other apps over it, and so on. I only tested this for about 30 minutes and now I need to try it for a longer time. Perhaps tomorrow. I did notice my battery is draining more quickly.

Anyway, this is what I am seeing on my device. I hope a better solution will become available later.

Hello, an update to 7.1.4 on the air.

If you don't receive that update, may be you can test the free version downloadable from oruxmaps.com

You can put geopdf maps in maps folder, the refresh the map list, and you should be able to use them.

This morning, I installed the update 7.1.4 via Google Play on my Pixel phone running Oreo 8.0.0.

Tested for about 2 hours. TRACKING WORKS again! At least it does for me. A track is being recorded even when the app is in the background, with other apps running or not, or when the screen is dark, etc. I will keep testing and update here if I see any changes. (See my earlier post for other settings in Android which may be necessary for OM to work properly.)

For others' information, note I had to reboot my phone before the OruxMaps update took effect.

I have also tried the PDF maps in the map folder, that works excellent! And I like the transparent menu bar also.

Thank you for your continued development of OruxMaps, I'm leaving a donation shortly!

Hello!

Sadly I have a similar problem - some part of my hike isn't tracked at all, or I get straight lines.

My phone is new Huawei Mate 9 using Nougat 7.0 (update to Oreo is under development). I use the current version 7.1.6 installed directly from the apk on your homepage.

I have seen different problems (but I have to admit with maybe different settings w.r.t. power saving):

- logging stops after about 1h of logging, straight line closing towards the end of my hike. No button press or app start when the track has been stopped. (But I have shot some photos with the native photo app wtihout any disturbance to tracking.)

- in the middle of a short hike - 30min or so - I see one straight line in the midle of my track.

- very mysteriously: yesterday I have started logging, then without fix I switched my phone off. Then there were two signals from oruxmaps signalling successful setup of barometer. BUT my track started one hour later, and it ended in a short straight line after another hour.

Power saving options tried so far

- don't optimize on OruxMaps

- don't kill background processes, but warn about them

- no power saving mode

Any further suggestions?

Should I asked my phone vendor for support?

Regards, Michael

Hello!

Sadly I have a similar problem with track logging. [This is my second post - maybe I pressed the wrong button.]

My phone is a Huawei Mate 9 running Nougat 7.0. I use the current version 7.1.6 of OruxMaps downloaded from this homepage.

My problems show different symptoms (maybe with different power saving settings, I have tested some different settings):

1. logging stops after about 1h, the final line segment towards my goal is a straight line, phone was in my pocket when the logging stopped unexpectedly. During (working) logging I took some photos using the native camera app.

2. During a short 1h hike somewheer in between the track has been shortened by a straight line about 30mins after start.

3. Yesterday I even lost half of the beginning from my 12km hike. I started logging without a fix, switched my phone off, then I got two signals from OruxMaps reporting barometer setup. But logging started 1h later, and ended finally in a straight line for the last 1km.

I tried different power settings

- disable power optimization for OruxMaps,

. don't kill power consuming background processes (but warn on them),

- no special power saving mode engaged.

Do you have any further suggestion howto improve logging?

Or should I ask my vendor for supprt?

Regards, Michael

Now I have tried exactly the settings given in my previous post, and GPS logging seems to work now. Today I have installed oruxmaps 7.2.0 for a short walk (1h 30min), and again GPS logging worked fine.

Thus maybe my problem is solved by carefully setting all energy saving settings within my Huawei mate 9 cellular.

Hi Orux,

Absolut fantastic!!

finally, i can confirm that your latest version of Oruxmaps (7.2.0) does work as good on my huawei P9 plus as all the years before on all my other phones before!

I completely lost hope in the last months because i thought that this problem can't be solved from your side.

Also all the other tracking software i used on this phone had the same problem. And Huawei never answered to my question.

Again: great, great, great!

I made a donation few minutes ago.

Is it possible for you to explain in short words how you solved this problem?

THX a lot,

Henning

Hello Orux,

First of all, many thanks for your great work!

I have used Oruxmaps for many years, still a pleasure.

I'm trying to get Oruxmaps logging working with Samsung power saving mode activated (in order to log very long tracks, and keep my battery high).

But as soon as I switch off the screen, the GPS recording seems to stop, and I'm facing a straight line to my current position when I switch back on the screen.

My device: Samsung Galaxy S6

- I already disabled power optimization for OruxMaps in Android settings

- I tried the different Oruxmaps GPS mode Fast/Defaut/Power saving: no change...

- I'm using an offline map.

Any idea or settings I can try to adjust?

Hi everybody,

I am the owner of honor 6X - android 7.0 - EMUI 5.0.1  --  oruxmaps - v.7.2.0

The recording of the track stops as soon as the screen switches off, I think all required authorizations are ok but a list of what is needed would be welcome for checking.

When screen is on again  a new point is recorded and a straight line between the two last points appears. Of course all stats are wrong (distance, speed,...).

I installed rustastic to check whether the recording is ok and no problem. I got perfect traces during hours.

I am very disappointed because to me oruxmaps is really a great app.

If somebobody could help it would be really nice.

Thanks

I have just tested the V.7.2.6beta10.

Still not working with Samsung power saving mode and screen off.

Hi Orux,

Thanks for your support ;-)

I have just tested the V.7.2.6beta10.

Still not working with Samsung power saving mode and screen off.

Regards

Hello!

Sorry, but the app is not compatible with any power saving mode.

In power saving mode, intensive apps are stopped.

Hi,

As recommended, I have tried oruxmaps 7.2.7 and 7.2.6beta10 but same result.

On Honor6X the recording stops when the screen switches off.

I confirm that runtastic records a perfect trace for hours so probably it doesn't come from a wrong parametrization of the phone.

It's a pity but I have to forget oruxmaps for track recording.

Tell me if I can do something to help you move in the right direction.

Anyway, from time to time, I'll try new versions to check whether things have improved.

Thanks for your work, despite this you offer a great app with interesting functionalities.

Cheers

It is not an exclusive problem of oruxmaps. Huawei is out of the energy management standards in android for a long. It is necessary to use some tricks, not well known. The usual forms in android seem not to work in Huawei. I have a huawei p8 lite 2017 (firmware b194) that works perfectly. Now I'm going to try with a 7x honor that seems to also give problems.

Huawei has answered me, they say that they will look for a 'fix' for that problem, but they have not given much information ...

I forgot to mention that this problem didn't happen in Android 5.0.2 (LP), so the issue is related to OS version

Currently I own a Xiaomi Mi A1 running Android 8.0.0 (O) and I have no straight lines nor any lost of GPS signal while screen is on/off, so I'm happy to use Oruxmaps as before.

Hi folks,

Sadly, I have to confirm the problem for Huawei P10 lite with Android 7.0/EMUI 5.1.1.

A friend of mine owns the Huawei P9 lite with Android 7.0, but with EMUI 5.0.1

Problem:

Recording of track stops when the screen turns off in current version 7.2.12. All battery saving features have been disabled.

But: v.7.2.10 works for both of us. As a consquence, we are using the old version again.

What an annoying problem! We really appreciate your work, Orux.

Cheers,

Pumphutt

I need to add that we it only works with "FUSED LOCATIONS PROVIDER" in 7.2.10 (but not in 7.2.12).

Hello!

It is a problem with huawei firmware; they solve the problem with last updates (for example, in android 8.0 version).

The problem is that I have to disable an important feature to all devices because of the problem with some huawei devices.

To confirm that I know exactly where is the problem, could you test this 7.2.12 version? --> http://www.oruxmaps.com/OruxMaps7.2.12b.apk

It is totally strange, that the "Fused Locations Provider" works in the older .10 and not in the .12 version.

I will give these beta you have linked a try and send you a feedback as soon as I have tested it.

many thanks for your quick response and the .12beta apk.

I just tested it for 45 minutes in the background / switched off Display.

It works great. No straight lines.

I think, the change you have done was the right one.

Hi orux,

hey, that's great. I confirm that in version 7.2.12b, tracking works again when the screen is turned off, both for my friend (Huawei P9 lite) and for me (Huawei P10 lite).

Maybe it would be a possibility to add a special checkbox for Huawei users in order to make it work. I don't know what the other important feature that you talked about is, but I didn't miss it yet.

Thank you!

Hello;

It is a problem because it is a filter that is included in the manifest (a XML file, a hardcoded filter) that allows the app to offer itself as an app that can open certain types of files (gpx, kmz, ...). When you are using a file browser, and click on a gpx / kmz file, OruxMaps appears as an option to open it.

The bug is solved with last huawei/honor updates.

I can do two different versions of free app, but I think it is not possible with donate version...

Hi isartrails,

have you tried one of the last versions orux postetd here?

Especially try to check the option "Fused Locations provider" unter Settings - Sensor - GPS

Additionally check all the power saving options of your device. Sometimes (e.g. Huawei devices) these options are incomprehensibly hidden.

This helped some people here already.

As I run OruxMaps with german version on my smartphone I do not have any idea, which setting is meant.

Under Settings - Sensors - GPS I do not find any checkbox which seems to be "fused locations provider".

Do you have a screenshot?

What version should I have actually on the phone?

As here has been talking about Huawei problems (and I do not have a Huawei) I did not upload a newer version.

Good morning

as detailed in my previous post, it worked for some days and also yesterday in the morning, when I registered a two hous track.

Then in the afternoon I went for an hike, and suddenly the problem reappeared.

I tried all the possible settins, but when truning off the screen the app did not track.

The only way to have it working (I already discovered it last week) is to activate another tracking app (I used sports tracker)

With this other app working, even the oruxmaps tracks properly.

In any case there is a problem with gps; I set a sound when gps fails, and every time I activate the screen, the failed gps alarm starts.

Unfortunately, none of those versions, including 7.2.13c, work for me.

Those who said that it worked, did you test it long enough?

I found that tracking stops after exactly 30 minutes screen off time.

It doesn't matter if I enable "huawei bug" or not.

My phone is Honor 6x with current firmware state (Android Nougat, latest official firmware).

It is sad, but as long as this issue is not resolved, Orux maps is not usable to me - all the other tracking apps I have on my phone do work (Locus, runtastic, osmand, osmtracker, viewranger).

The version 7.2.12b worked better for me (than 7.2.13c), indeed. But the results were not consistent, I had tracking working alright, and other times, it stopped with that version, too. Of course, I didn't use any power saving mode and I didn't permit automatic shutting down of the app because of high battery usage.

Unless, there is another new version, I am willing to start testing 7.2.12b again. Because as long as Oruxmaps is still tracking and doesn't start to produce straight lines, it appears to deliver very accurate tracking. Moreover, it is much faster than for instance Locus when shifting and rebuilding map display  (Locus is very slow there).

Hopefully, this issue can be resolved.

Hi guys, I experienced the same problem some time ago when I chenged my phone. I'm now using a samsung galaxy j3 with android 7.0.

I tried both oruxmaps donate and oruxmaps.

I tried disabling battery saving options with no result while it seems to work if you put display always on:My version is in Italian, you go to global settings (impostazioni globali) than to application (applicazioni), then set display always on (schermo sempre on)

I had this idea seeing that on all track registering application where display switchs off I had same problem while I had not with maps and another one where display was on.

I tried it today and it seems to work.

Hope this helps.

Well, sorry to say so, but I used 7.2.12b again today (with fused locations provider enabled), and once again, tracking stopped after 30 minutes of screen off time.

If that matters: I had several tracking programs open, besides Oruxmaps.

They all worked alright and recorded the whole track.

Perhaps, I should try it with only Oruxmaps running - but I doubt, this would improve anything.

It might be interesting to also note that this time, I used two smartphones (Honor 6x, see above), but also an old Vodafone 858 (which is Huawei U8160), the latter with Android 2.3.7.

On the Vodafone 858 I also had several tracking programs running, including Oruxmaps (6.5.0).

All the tracking apps (old runtastic, old Locus, old viewranger versions) did a good job, but even here Oruxmaps did not record the whole track! I took care not to turn on the screen for at least 45 minutes.

--edit--

I found a long thread about similar problems: The app Strava seems to have the same issues on Huawei phones.

Well, sorry to say so, but I used 7.2.12b again today (with fused locations provider enabled), and once again, tracking stopped after 30 minutes of screen off time.

If that matters: I had several tracking programs open, besides Oruxmaps.

They all worked alright and recorded the whole track.

Hi,

my Honor 6x firmware version is: BLN-L21C432B372.

Well, I discovered something I had not noticed before:

(Honor 6x)

In the history of power intensive apps that were automatically closed, I found Oruxmaps (and the time matches the 30 minutes screen off time I mentioned!). I had the power intensive warning for Oruxmaps disabled, but obviously, this just turns off the notification, but not the shutdown action itself...

I'd like to keep the setting "close power intensive apps" enabled, but aren't there any settings to create exceptions to the rule?

Let's say: close power intensive apps, but don't do it for Oruxmaps etc.?

Next time, I will make a longer walk/hike with the "close power intensive apps" disabled! Maybe, I'll have better luck with Oruxmaps then...

But again my question:

Is it possible to leave the feature enabled and create an exception to the rule?

Hello;

this is one of the stup... huawei settings you have to take in account.

apps not optimized, apps that can work when you turn off screen, apps that can consume power,... all in different settings.

Now I have found new settings in oreo (honor 7x), apps that can start automatically, apps that can be started by others,... all very intuitive. I think they're obsessed with the battery.

I remember that you can disable that setting for each app, but I don't remember where in nougat.

But with all settings in right position, I can record large tracks (more than 1 hour) with a huawei p8 lite with the last firmware  (nougat) and with the honor 7x with the oreo version.

I hope, it is time for some optimism...

Today, I was on a long walk and only turned on the screen of my Honor 6x after 2 and a half hours:

Oruxmaps was still tracking!

I used 7.2.12b, fused locations provider enabled (if that mattered), and the difference to my previous tests was:

I had disabled the setting to close power intensive apps.

Simultaneously, I ran several other tracking apps - so I should really repeat my experiments with only Oruxmaps running.

In the afternoon i reinstalled the same version 13d and, as few days ago  the app worked again. I made a walk of more than 2h with no problem

I did not change any settings

I had another walk, only 45 minutes (but longer than those 30 minutes I talked about).

With all power saving settings disabled (especially "close power intensive apps") and this time, running as the sole app on my smartphone, tracking did not stop after 30 minutes (no straight line!).

Fused locations provider was enabled. Might check without that next time...

(honor 6x, 7.2.12b)

I get straight lines again, after exactly 30 minutes! :-(

The difference to before:

I changed the time interval in the GPS settings from 0 to 2 seconds.

What does 0 as a time interval mean?

I had also changed the way distance from 20 to 5 meters.

Another change that may be relevant:

A recent system update to version BLN-L21C432B374.

Though even with this new version everything had worked like before (before I changed the above settings!).

At any rate, the system update to version ...B374 seems to be even more harmful to background processes:

GPS tracking apps (that worked with version B372 without any straight lines) are useless now:

- Osmand (each and every tracking session fails)

- Mapy.cz (sometimes fails)

- Oruxmaps fails again after changing the above settings

The only reliable GPS apps I have appear to be:

- viewranger

- locus map

- runtastic

Not a single problem with those 3 apps so far.

Hello!

did you tested with the 'stop apps that consume power' enabled or disabled (total or individually)?

you should use 0 seconds as time interval in your settings; tells android to use minimal time between GPS locations.

"stop apps that consume power" is globally disabled.

So, you suggest, I set the time interval to 0 again? Well, that's what I used before (and when Oruxmaps still worked).

Okay, this is easy, I will set it back to 0 then - hopefully, Oruxmaps will work again (the distance setting 5 meters instead of 20 should do no harm, I guess).

after the update to Android Oreo, i also had the problems that stopped the tracks recording after about 30 min.

After a few tries, I found a solution for my phone (prue Android 8.1 and Nokia).

I took LocationServices out of battery optimization.

Since then the track recording in Orux is running very well again.

Thanks for the great work on Oruxmaps

Alguien me podría ayudar?

Unfortunately I couldr not resolve the problem of stopped track registration yet. I was trying this for almost a year now and can say, that on some days everything is working fine even for hours and on other days the track registration stopped every time the screen shuts down. I have no idea why sometimes it's just working fine and on other days it's not?!?! I get crazy about this bug. I even think that action from other apps are causing the strange behavior: Oruxmaps works fine, but when my smartphone receives a message or a WhatsApp the track registration stops!!!

Strange enough, other apps are not influenced: Wahoo Fitness works fine almost all of the time, Locus has instead similar problems like OM.

I am not an expert, but at the end I believe it's not a settings issue, but interaction with other apps...

Actually: Wiko Upulse lite Android 7.0

Before: Wiko Rainbow with Android 4.4 everything worked fine.

@orux :

I have tried now for more than a year to fix the problem on my smartphone without any success.

I tried ALL suggestions, different apk-Versions, but the behaviour is remaining.

As I supposed in a previous post, some SETTINGS may help for certain hardware, certain OS in combination with certain APK-Version, but it is still no guarantee that this will help for everybody.

So I am at the point to choose a new Android-Smartphone for the only reason to work with OruxMaps properly!

My new smartphone must not satisfy other function.

Can someone please confirm which combination of hard- and software does REALLY work?

I need a proper every day tracking of activity without any worry.

Tanks for your input.

I have made a 4 hours mountain trip (way to the lodge) and a 4.5 hours trip (way back) this weekend.

On my first trip, I had activated the overall "Engery Saving Option" on my Android.

After approx. half hour it  did stop recording.

Therefore,  I de-activated the overall "Engery Saving Option" on my Android.

Since then and on my way back, it did record permanently.

So I am not 100 % shure, if just the follwoing setting solves the problem:

Buenas,

I've never had problems with background recording until now.

At the beginning of last month I went for a walk and it recorded fine. Last weekend, every time the phone screen was off recording stopped :-(

It was unfortunate because I wanted the data for a particular purpose.

Phone is a Samsung Galaxy S8, Android 9, Oruxmaps 7.5.7 .  The only thing that  changed between the two walks was I'd done an Android security update on the phone, and maybe updated Oruxmaps.

I know its most likely the android update and not the fault of Oruxmaps,  but this really sucks  because I love the app and had managed to avoid issues until now.

At least my old phone that I use mainly just as a gps works.

I have the s8 with android pie and found that I needed to turn off "power mode" (on pull down set of icons from home screen of phone) so that it stops doing my normal "medium power saving" and goes to "optimised" mode instead.

After struggling some days with this problem I found a solution that works for me, maybe it is of help to others!

Environment: Samsung M30S (6000mAh battery!), Android 9 (latest uodate), OruxMmaps: 7.0.2 (current version).

As suggested I set "power mode" to "optimised" (power saving off) and turned off battery optimisation for OruxMaps application.
But this was not sufficient: As soon as phone changed to standby Oruxmaps tracking was suspended and only restarted after turning on the screen (with a stright line...)
To better understand the problem I tried another tracking application: "GPS Logger".
It has an option "Keep GPS on between fixes". With this app running (and option set to ON)  also OruxMaps continues tracking! Even in standby mode.
It seems that Android location Services have to be kept alive somehow.
So I found another application: "GPS Locker". It does exactly what is required: keeps GPS alive.

Supported by this "assistant" OruxMaps works perfectly:
The quality of the track is superb: 2-5 meters accuracy on all points (independent of OruxMaps tracking parameters).
Battery drain is acceptable: 1 hour tracking takes about 3-4% of battery capacity (the lower in flight mode) so 20 hours of tracking should be possible.

Handling is a bit laborious:
You have to change power mode and start GPS Locker before starting Oruxmaps

Thanks for the wonderful OruxMaps application!

Good luck!

Update Feb, 21st:

MEA CULPA! Thanks for matt's advice!
I trusted Google Playstore that had updated my older version to 7.0.2!
Now I've installed 7.5.8 GP and tracking works in standby mode, without GPS Locker,  perfect!
