1. Tracks / Routes in OruxMaps Version 6

A Track consists of a colored line connecting the points.

Moreover, a track can be divided into segments, which are a set of consecutive points, creating a line.

Tracks act like breadcrumb trails, allowing you to see where you or another individual traveled in the past.

Tracks contain trackpoints or waypoints.

Tracks provide a record of where you have been, and when.

So you can later determine your path and speed.

"Wpts" (Waypoints) consist of "waypoints" and "POIs" represented by a pin or similar.

A "Wpt" has coordinates, type, description, and may have attachments that can be images, videos, audios and texts.

A "waypoint" literally is a point on your way (path).

A "POI" (Point of Interest) is place where you can do some activity,

OruxMaps offers two concepts which in essence are similar:

1. a track(Active track), 2. a route(Active route)

1. A Track is the actual path that was undertaken (actually recorded track).

2. A Route is a planned path for a future journey (Path to travel in the future).

* Active track is path that you are recording

* Active route is path that you are following

The map viewer can handle a Track (Active track), a Route (Active route) and some Static routes simultaneously.

In OruxMaps, a Track is dynamic, available on the screen in edit mode,

allowing you to make modifications (add more segments, add/remove Wpts).

* Track

OruxMaps can record a Track:

Use GPS signals, when starting the 'Track Recording' mode.

When you press the button 'Arrow'—'Start Recording', you initiate the recording of a track.

As mentioned, a track can be broken down into segments.

So when you want to stop (a break, resume a track in the next day),

just use the button 'Arrow – Stop Recording', to stop the logging.

When you resume your trip and press the same button again, you will be presented with three options:

(1) Start a new track. Removes the current track from the screen (but not from the database!).

(2) Start a new segment. It is belonging to the current track (this is recommended).

(3) Continue with the last segment of the current track. I personally do not recommend doing this, it is better to split the track in logical units, segments, each with its own statistics.

OruxMaps can create a Route in two ways: (1) Create route, (2) Search route

(1). Use the 'Create', when you are viewing a map.

When you press the map viewer button 'Road – Create', a number of buttons will be displayed on the screen

You can move the map using your finger, and create points or Wpts with the (+) button or remove them with the (-) button.

To leave the 'Create', accept (o) or cancel (x).

The newly created route is displayed on the screen and is the first entry in the list when you press 'Road – Manage tracks'.

A Route is static, you load it in the map viewer to see it or follow it while recording a new Track.

Like a track, a route consists of a colored line connecting the points.

Routes are generally made up of a series of significant points along your path.

A Route will tell you the bearing and remaining distance to the next point in sequence as you navigate along your route.

Each point is usually named (in fact, a route is usually just a sequence of waypoints).

* Route

'Routes' (Static Routes) can be loaded into the map viewer in various ways.

1. Directly from a GPX/KML file.

You can use the button 'Road — Load File' to open the GPX/KML file.

2. Based on tracks that was previously created or saved or imported into the application's database.

    - From the map viewer 'Road — Manage tracks' you can select 'a Track' and 'load as a Route'.

3. From a set of Wpts: From the map viewer, 'Wpts'—'Manage', to open the Wpt list.

    - You can filter and select the Wpts, then mark the checkboxes and press the button that will load the Wpts as a route.

TIP: Once you have selected the Wpts to create a route, you select them one by one and then choose the option 'eliminate from list'.

Once you have eliminated the Wpts, you wish to use as a route, you can use 'menu – filter – invert'.

You now have an ordered list on the screen of all the points you wish to use to generate the route.

Once you have a route in the map viewer, you can not only view it but also 'follow' it.

This is done by pressing the button 'Road'—'follow route'.

The GPS needs to be enabled for this mode to be of practical use.

If you have the dashboard activated, you will get information such as:

 Remaining distance (Distance to Destination)

 % completed

 ETA, ETE (estimated time of arrival, estimated time en route)

 Delay with respect to the original route. If the points have time stamps, you have a reference of how you are doing compared to the times of the original route.

 Etc.

If you want to follow a route the other way round, then simply use the button, 'Road'—'Invert'.

If you want to go from Wpt to Wpt on the route and not "Follow Route", you can activate the mode 'Road'—'Wpt navigation'.

In this mode the indicators on the dashboard (target distance, ETA, ETE) are relative to the next Wpt.

ALARMS: When you have activated the 'Follow Route' mode,

OruxMaps can trigger an alarm that alerts you if you deviate more than X meters from the route.

To activate this option, use the button 'Road'—'Alarm'.

The deviation distance at which the alarm sounds can be configured in 'Settings – Text To Speech / Sounds'.

Various routes can be loaded simultaneously in the map viewer.

However, only one can be 'follow a route' or used for 'Wpt Navigation'.

Each route will have a green flag at its starting point.

To activate a route, press its start flag and select 'activate'.

If you wish to remove a route from the map viewer, press the flag and select 'remove'.

(2). Search A route between two points:

To search a route between two points, using 'Road' - 'Search route'.

Select the mode of travel, and click on the map 'start point' and 'end point'.

OruxMaps seek the best route, and indicate on the map.

Remember that OruxMaps is not a navigator on-road! What you get is a journey, including voice messages,

but do not expect wonders, there is still much room for improvement.

If you tap the first point of a route, you will find different options:

 Activate: You can have several routes loaded in the map viewer,

but only one is active in order to "Follow Route" or "Wpt. Navigation".

Click this option to change active route.

 Remove: Remove that route from the map viewer

 Center map: Centering the map

 Navigator: Google or sygic

 Export to a file: Save the route as a GPX/KML/KMZ in your tracks folder.

Where can you find tracks?

There are hundreds of different formats in which tracks can be saved.

Each software producer has their own format.

OruxMaps uses the two most standardized formats: KML, GPX.

If you have tracks in another format, you can always convert them to KML / GPX with GPSBabel.

There are many websites from which you can download gpx / kml files for use in OruxMaps:

...

From OruxMaps you can directly upload tracks to some of these sites

Lot of thanks for your explanations. For sure they will be extremely useful for beginners. I'd suggest pinning this topic at the top of the forum

Hello. I need when a track is recording, the distance between adjacent points should be 5-7 meters. How can I change a settings to realise this?

I set the value of the autosegment distance is 0.005 km, but the value was not saved.

Hello

I am new to Orux. Can I upload tracks I have stored on my laptop PC, or from a drive on my mobile phone?

Hi. You have to save them in the tracklogs folder and then upload them to Orux from the app. There you can also join them into one.

So when you create a manual track, I put in several points which creates the segments and say I made the track go where I didn't mean for it to go and I saved the track.

I see how you can add more points to that track, but is there no way to delete a point at the end or anywhere in the track?
