Some ways are dashed, so it looks a bit confusing.
I think in the past it was different.
Wouldn't it be better to paint a solid line with dashed filling, like tiramisu?
Hi Thomas,
thanks for your feedback. I've always used dashed to symbolize deteriorating track quality, something that I know form paper maps. The shorter the dashes, the worse the quality of the track, see also the map key: http://www.openandromaps.org/en/legend/elevate-mountain-hike-theme

For me it's easier to see in bright light with a short look, than different shades of similar colors. So I stick to it - but it's nice to have choices :-)
Best regards,
Tobias
You're theme is really amazing now Tobias.
Each "sub theme" stores his layers settings. Perfect
City- I switched all on,
Bike- I switched some off.
I used in the past the xl version.
With the new mf engine I use the svg version. Looks good.
Font scale I set to 1.1 symbol scale to 1.2.
I am sure, Orux will solve also the language bug, but with the workaround it is ok.
Quote from: "6745th@web.de"You're theme is really amazing now Tobias.
Thanks! I'm still amazed about all new possibilities which make the new themes much more flexible. I think I added most major features I had in mind now, so now every feedback for fine tuning is valuable. Some smaller changes for optimized rendering are still pending, but those are more subtle.

Great, that's what I had in mind - I like it when a have a choice as a user, that's why I made many categories to choose from. I hope they all make sense.
With city, do you have public transport routes AND public transport activated?

Yes, the SVG version is more flexible, good that it already found its use. The biggest problem is that some symbols are not as clear as before without the slight glow effect, for example tram stops.

Tobias
Third preview for Elevate 3
All information and limits about this preview versions see above.
This version is now feature complete, so it needs some testing and help for the (machine) translated map style menu labels.
In this third preview there was a lot of fine tuning:
- Elements optimized to have as little zoom-mins as possible
- maps style menus with english, french, german, italian and spanish labels, please help with corrections of some machine translated content
- settings are remembered for each style/theme in OruxMaps
- replaced all dy for symbols with symbol-id/position
- transformed paths/footways to cycleways if bicycle=yes (cycling), transformed cycleways to footways with cycling marker if foot=yes (hiking/city)
- added different zoom mins for different styles for some symbols
- added priorities for most symbols

Thanks, I was too quick with copy and paste and didn't delete all html, now it should work.
After some development time with several test version Elevate 3.0 has been released today. Please take notice that this version can only used with apps that are compatible with mapsforge 0.5, e.g. OruxMaps 6.4beta and later.
As many apps aren't (e.g. the current OruxMaps playstore version 6.0.7) I also added a legacy version Elevate 2.5 which has many of the improvements of Elevate 0.3, as far as possible.
Both versions can be downloaded here:
http://www.openandromaps.org/en/legend/elevate-mountain-hike-theme
The big improvements of Elevate 3.0 are:
Map styles are now integrated in one theme file, this means hiking/cycling/city can now be selected directly, only Elements needs another theme file. The map styles differ more than before.
Overlays make it possible to switch on or off of different elements, e.g. captions, symbols, protected areas etc.
Additional overlays are showing now better visible and emphasized hiking or cycling routes or are a public transport network is shown.
Priorities make it possible that settlement names and important symbols are shown much more reliably.
A version with SVG-symbols is now scalable for all kinds of devices. The size variants are now only necessary because the glow of symbols there makes them easier to see.
Elements now supports all map styles as in Elevate with hiking, city or cycling. The difference is that everything is shown as soon it is contained in the map data.
Additionally many improvements and new map elements have been added, in Elevate 3.0 as well as in Elevate 2.5:
Cycling: cycleways are now emphasized and surface information is shown.
Cycling: paths and footways with cycling=yes are now rendered like cycleways.
Accompanying cycle lanes/tracks on roads are now shown.
Hiking/city: cycleways with foot=yes are now rendered like footways.
New settlement names like capitals, farms and quarters are now shown.
And many more smaller improvements and additions.
An update for Elevate 3 and 2 has just been released. Many changes in details, biggest news are: optimized low zoom rendering and outline SVG symbols for better perceptibility. Download here as usual: http://www.openandromaps.org/en/legend/elevate-mountain-hike-theme
All changes:
3.0.1 26/05/15
- added Locus version with limited support of new abilities and no switchable overlays
- added outline to SVG symbols for better perceptibility
- changed display of public transport stations, now analogous to public transport network of city style

- moved ski pistes below paths
Because of the server move it was possible that still old version were downloaded after the update yesterday. This is now fixed.
A new update for Elevate 3 has been released.
It's more important for Locus users, as switchable overlays are now possible.
For all others rendering of street names and route refs are now more reliable.

Elevate 3.0.5 and 2.5.4 have just been released. Please use only with maps starting 30/07/15 and newer.
All changes:
- added trail_visibility rendering to path/footway without sac_scale, added access=no for various items (rendered like access=private)
- added closed=yes to landcover and water areas (incl. fallback option) to avoid some rendering issues with double tagging on ways and relations
- changed access=no to access=acc_no for maps starting 30/07/15
Elevate 2 and 3 have been updated. Some changes to roads for better distinctness, and surface now plays a role how paths are rendered in hiking styles if they don't have difficulty information, and lots of other small changes.
3.0.6 19/09/15
- changed rendering for footways/paths without sac_scale for hiking style: brown means unpaved path/footway (or path without surface information); grey means paved path/footway (or footway without surface information)

Hello eartrumpet
I am trying to use Elevate 3 but without success on a New Zealand map downloaded from OpenAndroMaps in August 2015 I have OruxMaps version 6.0.10 Elevate 2.5 works OK
Back in March 2015 you say
"Please take notice that this version (Elevate 3) can only used with apps that are compatible with mapsforge 0.5, e.g. OruxMaps 6.4beta and later"
I cannot find reference to which version of Elevate is correct for non-beta versions of OruxMaps
Could you please clarify if Elevate 3 should work OK with OM 6.0.10?

Nothing has changed, Elevate 3 still requires 6.4 beta or higher (currently 6.5RC2 here: http://www.oruxmaps.com/foro/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2560 ).

OruxMaps 6.0.10 is not compatible, as all 6.0.* versions. You can find the reference at the download page under the heading "Elevate 2".
Thanks for the prompt reply
I see the reference to OM versions has been updated since I last looked at the Elevate 2 explanatory text - that's very helpful
Quote from: "ianL"Thanks for the prompt reply

Yes, sorry, I thought that it would be clear that a version with 6.0.anything like 6.0.10 is still even it is released later still has not the features of 6.4beta and later.
Elevate 2 and 3 have been updated. The major changes are only visible with OpenAndroMaps starting with October 2015. Among smaller changes these are the most prominent ones:
Low zooms are much more usable now, including state and mountain range names. Larger areas of interest and their captions appear earlier, smaller later.
For better visibility some highway colors have been changed, most prominently: (inter)national cycling routes are now violet, regional are red.
And a lot of smaller changes to optimize behaviour at different zoom levels.
All changes:
3.1.0 08/10/15
- low zoom areas are now much more usable: names for states and mountain ranges/areas are displayed, names of lakes/glaciers/woods/mountain ranges/protected for larger areas are displayed earlier and for smaller areas later (differs for city style)
- it's easier to distinguish between routes and highways as colors are optimized: (inter)national cycling routes are now violet, regional are red (already changed mtb routes and colors of major highways in earlier versions)
- improved Elements: limited symbols and captions somewhat to make low zooms less random and more usable
- added place=state, natural=mountain_range, natural=mountain_area for low zooms, bboxweight for poly_labels, zoom-min for ditch/stream/drain/river/canal/railway/pier/runway/apron/taxiway, different colors for some landscape names, small ford symbol for Elements low zooms
- changed rendering of settlement names, zoom-min for island captions/forest areas, low zoom hiking/cycling routes, captions & rendering of protected areas
- fixed rendering of low zoom motorway tunnels, volcano low zoom captions
2.6.0 08/10/15
- low zoom areas are now much more usable: names for states and mountain ranges/areas are displayed, names of lakes/glaciers/woods/mountain ranges/protected for larger areas are displayed earlier and for smaller areas later (differs for Elegant)
- it's easier to distinguish between routes and highways as colors are optimized: (inter)national cycling routes are now violet, regional are red (already changed mtb routes and colors of major highways in earlier versions)
- added place=state, natural=mountain_range, natural=mountain_area for low zooms, bboxweight for poly_labels, different colors for some landscape names, small ford symbol for Elements low zooms
- changed rendering of settlement names, zoom-min for island captions/forest areas, low zoom hiking/cycling routes, captions & rendering of protected areas
- fixed rendering of low zoom motorway tunnels, volcano low zoom captions
Once again a small update for Elevate 2 and 3. Some new symbols, apart from that mainly optimizations.
3.1.1 10/11/15
- optimized SVG symbols, rerendered PNG symbols
- changed rendering of tracks, rendering of routes at ZL 12+13, color of contour lines, rendering of pipelines
- added shop=travel_agency, new symbol for pub, amenity=bar
2.6.1 10/11/15
- rerendered PNG symbols on optimized Elevate 3 SVG symbol basis
- changed rendering of tracks, rendering of routes at ZL 12+13, color of contour lines, rendering of pipelines
- added shop=travel_agency, new symbol for pub, amenity=bar
Elevate 2 and 3 have been updated. Mainly changes/additions in landuse captions. Elevate 3 adds in cycling style a marker for oneway streets where cycling is allowed in opposite direction (with OAM maps from January 2016 on).
3.1.2 10/01/16
- added oneway:bicycle=no for cycling style (turquoise arrow added where cycling is allowed in opposite direction of oneway streets), name captions in city style for retail/commercial/industrial/brownfield/garages/construction/greenfield, name caption for residential/farmyard/farm landuses
- changed ZL for high zoom forest/wood/desert captions
2.6.2 10/01/16
- added name caption for residential/farmyard/farm landuses
- changed ZL for high zoom forest/wood/desert captions
With the update of OruxMaps to version 6.5.0 Elevate 3 finally works with the playstore version. So anyone who didn't use the beta/release candidates can use this much improved version.
The big improvements of Elevate 3.0 are:
- Map styles are now integrated in one theme file, this means hiking/cycling/city can now be selected directly, only Elements needs another theme file. The map styles differ more than before.
- Overlays make it possible to switch on or off of different elements, e.g. captions, symbols, protected areas etc.
- Additional overlays are showing now better visible and emphasized hiking or cycling routes or are a public transport network is shown.
- Priorities make it possible that settlement names and important symbols are shown much more reliably.
- A version with SVG-symbols is now scalable for all kinds of devices. The size variants are now only necessary because the glow of symbols there makes them easier to see.
- Elements now supports all map styles as in Elevate with hiking, city or cycling. The difference is that everything is shown as soon it is contained in the map data.
A new small update of Elevate 2 and 3. Mainly finetuning/fixes for path/cycleway/footway rendering.
3.1.3 09/02/16
- limited bicycle=no marking to relevant highways in cycling style
- restructured path rendering rules, fixed some missing trail_visibility information for path/footway without sac_scale in hiking style, fixed color for cycleway with foot=yes without surface information in hiking
- added bicycle access information for path/footway in hiking/city style, added weak priority for ele captions, leisure=picnic_table
- Locus: moved most captions for symbols to zoom level 17 and higher because of missing priorities/different collision management/missing dy on areas in Locus
2.6.3 09/02/16
- limited bicycle=no marking to relevant highways in cycling style
- restructured path rendering rules, fixed some missing trail_visibility information for path/footway without sac_scale in hiking style, fixed color for cycleway with foot=yes without surface information in hiking
- added bicycle access information for path/footway in hiking/city style, leisure=picnic_table
There was a problem with some footways in the last version, therefore I made a new one.
3.1.4 09/02/16
- fixed path/footway rendering rules
2.6.4 09/02/16
- fixed path/footway rendering rules
Elevate 3 and 2 have been updated. As announced before Elevate 2 will from now on only get additons which aren't too complex.
The major changes for Elevate 3 are optimized low and very low zooms incl. markers for cities/capitals, rendering of crevasses in glaciers and better captions for small SVG symbols.
3.1.5 07/03/16
- added caravan_site to low zoom markers, border for admin_level=3, natural=crevasse, low zoom markers for cities/capitals
- changed admin borders, rendering of some place names, rendering of low zoom (inter)national routes, moved low zoom highways to level 11 and lower, reduced caption/symbol distance for small SVG symbols (non-Locus), optimized very low zooms
- corrected spanish translation for overlay menus
- Locus: moved protected area borders to zoom level 16 because of rendering issue
2.6.5 07/03/16
- added caravan_site to low zoom markers, border for admin_level=3, natural=crevasse
- changed admin borders
A small update to adapt Elevate for the new optimized tagmapping for maps mid march and later, and some small corrections/optimizations.
3.1.6 16/03/16
- changed leisure=track to leisure=ls_track, larger symbol/earlier ZL for amenity=bus_station
- corrected SVG scale factor for public transport network stations, removed SVG scaling in Locus PNG versions
- removed leisure=ls_track from highways/tourism, moved highway=raceway upwards, moved residential landuse etc. to level 12+
2.6.6 16/03/16
- changed leisure=track to leisure=ls_track, larger symbol/earlier ZL for amenity=bus_station
- removed leisure=ls_track from highways/tourism, moved highway=raceway upwards, moved residential landuse etc. to level 12+
Betatest Elevate 4
With the major change to scalable graphics in the last test version I made the step to offer only one scalable version and have tested and adjusted this accordingly with several screen densities. This is one reason for a major new version number, therefore I now release the first test version of Elevate 4.
Another big change concerns routes: now national and international routes have seperate colors, which led to change all colors so that they now match those that are used for hiking routes in some areas. As cycling and hiking routes don't appear in the same map style anymore (as in Elements 2) both now use the same colors.
http://www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/users/tobias/Elevate4.zip
4.0 beta 03/05/16
- one size only: SVG version which scales with screen density is now default (instead of various sizes, removed those)
- Locus: added "dp" to all values for adjusting to screen density
- new SVG patterns that scale with screen density, changed pattern zoom behaviour
- reworked routes: new unified colors for hiking and cycling routes, seperate colors for international and national routes, new low zoom rendering for hiking routes on paths, optimized route rendering
- added tourism=apartment, zoom-min to some bridges and tunnels, extra pattern colors for access=private (orange) and access=no (red)
- changed low zoom captions, cycle and hike nodes, captions for protected areas, symbol for tourism=chalet, cliff rendering, motorway_junction caption, high zoom hiking routes on cycleways, access patterns
- limited capital to certain places, removed sled pistes from cycling mapstyle
Sorry only in German for Tobias:
Hallo Tobias,

http://www.oruxmaps.com/foro/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3474&start=90#p9064
Entweder Beta 10 oder 6.5.0 benutzen, oder auf den Bugfix warten.
Viele Grüße,
Tobias
Hallo Tobias,
danke für die schnelle Antwort.
José wird daß sicherlich bald fixen. Ich benutze solange die 2er elevate Version.
Alles Gute,
Thomas

Second beta for Elevate 4. Main changes to last beta: changed colors for local and regional cycling routes, more optimizations of routes and patterns, for Locus patterns are for the moment fixed size.
Download:
http://www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/users/tobias/Elevate4.zip
4.0 beta2 09/05/16
- one size only: SVG version which scales with screen density is now default (instead of various sizes, removed those)
- Locus: added "dp" to all values for adjusting to screen density
- new SVG patterns that scale with screen density (except Locus, fixed size necessary atm), changed pattern zoom behaviour
- reworked routes: seperate colors for international and national routes (same for hiking and cycling - blue and green), new low zoom rendering for hiking routes on paths, optimized route rendering
- added tourism=apartment, zoom-min to some bridges and tunnels, seperate pattern colors for access=private (orange) and access=no (red)
- changed low zoom captions, cycle and hike nodes, captions for protected areas, symbol for tourism=chalet, cliff rendering, motorway_junction caption, high zoom hiking routes on cycleways, access patterns
- limited capital to certain places, removed sled pistes from cycling mapstyle
Third beta for Elevate 4. Main changes to last beta: added seperate MTB map style with new rendering for mtb_scale_uphill and added trail_visibility to path
Download:
http://www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/users/tobias/Elevate4.zip
4.0 beta3 18/05/16

- new SVG patterns that scale with screen density, changed pattern zoom behaviour
- new MTB mapstyle: new rendering for mtb_scale_uphill, added trail_visibility to paths, removed mtb_scale from highways with access limits
- reworked routes: seperate colors for international and national routes (same for hiking and cycling - blue and green), new low zoom rendering for hiking routes on paths, optimized route rendering
- Locus: added "dp" to all values for adjusting to screen density, added standard V4 version, renamed Locus edition with "LE"
- added tourism=apartment, zoom-min to some bridges and tunnels, seperate pattern colors for access=private (orange) and access=no (red)
- changed low zoom captions, cycle and hike nodes, captions for protected areas, symbol for tourism=chalet, cliff rendering, motorway_junction caption, high zoom hiking routes on cycleways, access patterns, moved observation tower to outdoor overlay, removed viewpoint from towers, rendering for sac_scale 5/6 limited capital to certain places, removed sled pistes from cycling mapstyle
Last test version for Elevate 4. If no bigger problems arise this will replace Elevate 3 soon.
The biggest change concerns access limits, those are filtered now: a way with only private/no access is only rendered as that in hiking (or cycling) mapstyle, if this access limit is also valid for pedestrians (or cyclers). Only the city mapstyle shows general access limits.

Hi!
I am working with mapsforge 0.8.0 libraries, that support hillshading.
But I do not get it to work, because I think hillshading attributes should be included in the theme. Can you confirm that?

As far as I get it there's a element to be positioned where you think it fits in the theme (those are the default values):
<hillShading zoom-min="5" zoom-max="17" magnitude="64" layer="5" />

Thanks;
there was a bug in the library with negative longitudes, now is working with default theme.
added 0.8 mapsforge libraries to the last beta version.
I think that hillshading requires themes version v6.

is there a way to download only a portion of a map? how?
I would like to reproduce the online map/offline map creation behavior where you can select a very restricted area.
thank you

Only full download of OAM is possible.
It is possible to download individual extracts in mapsforge format here, but various OAM features are missing:

There are new versions of Elevate 4 and Elevate 2 available. It is recommended to use maps at least August 2017 or later with these, and they work best with October 2017 or later.
Big changes are a new overlay for extended road surface information, new via ferrata rendering, solid/dashed borders for cycleways and changed visibility information for paths without sac_scale. Check out the map key for further information. And lots of smaller changes, too:
4.2.0 06/10/17
- new optional overlay for extended road surface information of primary/secondary/tertiary/track roads and missing surface in cycling/MTB/hiking map style
- new via ferrata rendering: added non-switchable via_ferrata marking and highway=via_ferrata (for maps starting October 2017 and later)
- added dashed borders for non-paved cycleways (cycling/MTB), leisure=swimming_area, leisure=beach_resort, separate symbol for leisure=water_park, bboxweight for archipelagos and islands (for maps starting October 2017 and later), patterns for camp_site/caravan_site/golf_course (in case symbols for accomodation/sports are switched off), surface for turning circles
- changed administrative borders, all areas with strokes to areas with separate line for VTM compatibility
- removed "no trail_visibility available" marking for paths/footways without sac_scale/mtb_scale, old raw_sac_scale values (which were used in maps earlier than August 2017)
2.8.0 06/10/17
- added dashed borders for non-paved cycleways (cycling), leisure=swimming_area, leisure=beach_resort, separate symbol for leisure=water_park, bboxweight for archipelagos and islands (for maps starting October 2017 and later), surface for turning circles
- new via ferrata rendering: added non-switchable via_ferrata marking and highway=via_ferrata (for maps starting October 2017 and later)
- removed "no trail_visibility available" marking for paths/footways without sac_scale, old raw_sac_scale values (which were used in maps earlier than August 2017)
- changed administrative borders
Very much appreciate your work however...
I have mentioned this to you before. I find all the many different track types incredibly confusing and hard to remember.
You have 6 different track types! for a simple hiking trail! then its further segmented by 3 different visibility of trail indicators marked by how dashed the lines are !
Who can remember all this unless they bring a paper copy of the map key with them when walking...... your map key is 21 pages! https://www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/users/tobias/Elevate_map_key.pdf
PLEASE PLEASE RELEASE A VERSION WITHOUT ALL THE TRACK TYPES !!
For the hiking style you have
Yellow - Hiking]Blue - Mountain hiking: partially steep, fall hazard possible
Red - - Demanding mountain hiking]Black - (Difficult/demanding)Alpine hiking/Via Ferrata: no trail, very exposed, climbing, glaciers
Then you also have further segmentation by broken and dashed lines or two thin dashed lines !
and then you have regular uncategorized trails
Brown - unpaved path/footway (alot of tracks are marked as this even very difficult ones because no user has categorized it
Grey - paved path/footway.
and then their is roads, train lines etc etc.
Any competent hiker can use the contours to work out the steepness of the terrain.. and a number of the trail types are wrong or not marked.. some trails marked as red are just a gentle slope others are very technical steep slopes involving scrambling up cliffs..(not your fault or responsibility this is just openstreet map contributor error but it underscores the point that why have all these track types when a user cant rely on it to be reasonably accurate)
Sorry for this rant. I love your maps and very much appreciate you do all this for free. I just find this one thing very much reduces my safety (to confusing because oruxmaps also has different colours for sections of the route so easy to think im on the route but actually ive followed a different trail the same colour as the orux route) and enjoyment of using the map. If you just have an option to not show all the trail type and just mark all trail as brown then problem would be solved. If others want all the different types then it is still there.
Quote from: "wildwanderer"Who can remember all this unless they bring a paper copy of the map key with them when walking.
Everyone who is used to the way hiking paths are marked in the Eastern Alps, like this:
//http://www.nationalpark-berchtesgaden.bayern.de/nationalpark/wandern/wandertipps/pic/schilderkonzept_15x10.jpg
Quote..... your map key is 21 pages! https://www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/users/tobias/Elevate_map_key.pdf
It's formatted for on-screen-use on a smartphone, not for printing. The relevant section is just two pages, you could print this in credit card size and attach it to your phone :-)
QuotePLEASE PLEASE RELEASE A VERSION WITHOUT ALL THE TRACK TYPES !!
Use city or cycling map style. Or a different theme:
//https://www.openandromaps.org/en/oam-forums/topic/map-theme-link-collection
QuoteYellow - Hiking]Blue - Mountain hiking: partially steep, fall hazard possible
Red - - Demanding mountain hiking]Black - (Difficult/demanding)Alpine hiking/Via Ferrata: no trail, very exposed, climbing, glaciers
That's just the short version, if you look here (//http) or at the original definition of the Swiss Alpine Club, you will see that they are well defined and definitely very different categories, which is essential to know.
QuoteThen you also have further segmentation by broken and dashed lines or two thin dashed lines !
Yes, by user demand, an in a way that is not very distracting if you're not interested, and quite logic as well - the more broken the dashes, the more difficult the trail.
Quoteand then you have regular uncategorized trails
Of course, should I not show them? Sac_scale should only be used in the mountains, so the majority of footways/paths will never have sac_scale. But showing them in the same color would be simply wrong, so there has to be a different one.
Quoteand then their is roads, train lines etc etc.
Yes, it's a map. Should be there.
QuoteAny competent hiker can use the contours to work out the steepness of the terrain..
As written above, steepness is only one of many variables that are part of sac_scale.
Quoteand a number of the trail types are wrong or not marked.. some trails marked as red are just a gentle slope others are very technical steep slopes involving scrambling up cliffs..(not your fault or responsibility this is just openstreet map contributor error but it underscores the point that why have all these track types when a user cant rely on it to be reasonably accurate)
Then it's up to you to correct the data, that's part of OSM. Here in the Eastern Alps the vast majority of markings is correct, this theme is made for this. Of course it can be used in every other area on this planet, and I do this as well. An my experience isn't that bad. Mostly it isn't marked, but then you have the brown paths you demand.
QuoteSorry for this rant.
Have you ever achieved anything with something like this?
Quote I love your maps and very much appreciate you do all this for free.
Thanks, and I have stated here and in the map legend why I do things I do:
https://www.openandromaps.org/en/oam-forums/topic/elevate-hiking-version
If you're not satisfied, this theme might be not for you. That was my starting point for making Elevate, and that's why the license of Elevate allows everyone to modify it to fit their need and also publish it.
Quote I just find this one thing very much reduces my safety (to confusing because oruxmaps also has different colours for sections of the route so easy to think im on the route but actually ive followed a different trail the same colour as the orux route) and enjoyment of using the map.
You can define in OruxMaps the route that it looks nothing like anything contained in Elevate. Especially the "route path effect" helps. Also all paths in Elevate are dashed, so it's very easy to distinguish if you choose to have a solid route without "route path effect".
Quote If you just have an option to not show all the trail type and just mark all trail as brown then problem would be solved. If others want all the different types then it is still there.
The option would need an extra map style. I use map styles only for really major differences (hiking/cycling/mtb/city), so this won't happen.
There are new versions of Elevate 4 and 2. Main changes are the support of new map contents (starting mid November 2017), higher peaks are now shown earlier and, if the app supports it, are prioritized. In Elevate 4 with waymarks also waycolor can be displayed, and the overlays contents have been rearranged a bit.
All changes:
4.2.1 28/11/17
- added zoom level visibility/priority per dominance for peaks/volcanos, osmc way colors (to waymarks overlay), blue/green/yellow arch waymark foregrounds, tower=windmill, bunker/bunker_disused, adit/adit_disused
- moved patterns for swimming areas/tourist attractions/golf courses/camping & caravan sites to special areas overlay, removed tourism=attraction from protected areas, tennis grounds/running tracks/swimming areas from sports overlay, limited tourism=attraction zoom level for Elements
- fixed ele for small volcano symbols, low zoom railway tunnels
2.8.1 28/11/17
- added zoom level visibility/priority per dominance for peaks/volcano, tower=windmill, bunker/bunker_disused, adit/adit_disused
- removed tourism=attraction symbol from various other pois, removed tourism=attraction from protected areas,
- fixed low zoom railway tunnels
There are some new Elevate versions available. The biggest change is that now access limits are much more accurate to the mode of transportation the map style is made for, and with this the separate color for cycling prohibited was also removed. New map versions are needed for this to work properly.
All changes:
4.2.2 13/02/18
- new access rendering: private/no/destination/permit patterns now shown per transport mode the mapstyle implies (foot/general values for hiking, bicycle/vehicle/general values for cycling/MTB, general values only for city), removed separate pattern bicycle=no
- added seasonal for waterways, surface=winter, symbols for mountain passes with direction, building=construction
- removed house number display from peaks
2.8.2 13/02/18
- new access rendering for cycling: private/no/destination/permit patterns now additionally show cycling access limits, removed separate pattern bicycle=no
- added seasonal for waterways, surface=winter, building=construction
- removed house number display from peaks, fixed living_street rendering
There's a new Elevate version available, biggest change is the addition of an overlay switch to turn the map background off (for a transparent map to overlay on satellite images e.g.)
4.2.3 23/04/18
- added the possibility to switch map background off (for composite maps), zoom min for area captions in Elements
- fixed tram stations, rough paved surfaces on highway=service
- changed zoom-min for playgrounds
2.8.3 23/04/18
- added zoom min for area captions in Elements
- fixed tram stations
Hi Tobias, there is a typo in the Italian strings.
"Percorsi accentato" should be "Percorsi accentuati"

Thanks! As I don't speak Italian that helps a lot, I hope the other things make sense (those things are hard to get right even for languages you speak a bit)
Elevate has been updated. Biggest changes include refinded redering of settlement names by population, better cycleway rendering and incline direction for MTB uphill scale.
All changes:
4.2.4 18/06/18
- added incline direction to MTB uphill scale, refs for ways without cycling/hiking routes (in cycling/hiking route overlays), refs for highway links, waterway=lock_gate, seperate rendering for minor aerialways, PopCat for city/town/village
- optimized cycleway rendering, cycling routes captions, waterway=dam, place rendering
- fixed Italian translation
2.8.4 18/06/18
- added incline direction to MTB uphill scale, PopCat for city/town/village, waterway=lock_gate, seperate rendering for minor aerialways
- optimized waterway=dam, place rendering
Elevate has been updated, please use the latest maps for these versions. Biggest changes are optimized rendering of settlement names and regional cycling routes starting ZL10 for most maps.
All changes:
4.2.5 10/08/18
- added aerialway=zip_line, aerialway=station, regional cycling routes for ZL10/11 (maps of end of July 2018 and later), zoom-min for valley/canyon/peninsula, cw_lane_oneway/cw_track_oneway
- optimized rendering of settlement names rendering including improved popcat implementation (maps 06/08/18 and later), access for mtb mapstyle, mountain_range/mountain_area, oneways
- removed old cycleway tags
2.8.5 10/08/18
- added aerialway=zip_line, aerialway=station, regional cycling routes for ZL10/11 (maps of end of July 2018 and later), zoom-min for valley/canyon/peninsula, cw_lane_oneway/cw_track_oneway
- optimized rendering of settlement names rendering including improved popcat implementation (maps 06/08/18 and later), mountain_range/mountain_area
- removed old cycleway tags
Elevate has been updated. Mainly to support some new map features and similar treatment of surfaces of non-cycling-paths in cycling/MTB non-cycling paths as non-hiking-paths in hiking.
All changes:
4.2.6 08/10/18
- cycling/MTB style: changed rendering for footways/paths without mtb_scale/bicycle=yes etc., now similar as in hiking: brown means unpaved path/footway (or path without surface information); grey means paved path/footway (or footway without surface information)
- added watermill, windpump, osmc way color orange, boundary_stone
- changed symbols for bicycle shop, cinema, rearranged drawing order of some areas
2.8.6 08/10/18
- added watermill, windpump, boundary_stone
- changed symbols for bicycle shop, cinema, rearranged drawing order of some areas
There's a new Elevate update after a while. With Elevate 4.3 there are new optional overlays: in the city map style small ways like paths and tracks can be switched off, so the map will be more clear and is better usable for motorists. In hiking resp. cycling/MTB it is now possible to mark paths and tracks where the usage by foot/bike is permitted – this is important in countries where usage is forbidden/private in the first place. Also in cycling now ways are marked especially which are allowed for cycling, but are maybe too steep/rough. And as always some smaller changes.
Some time ago an additional license was added, so Elevate can now be used commercially (but then changing it isn't allowed). As Elevate is now the main mapstyle for OpenAndroMaps and not the Andromaps mapstyles, and not an additional exclusive one.
Elevate 2 is now deprecated and won't be updated anymore, as it was already announced in the forum. Most apps, like c:geo recently, now support mapsforge rendertheme V4 mapstyles with mapstyle menus, therefore the parallel development doesn't make much sense anymore.
4.3.0 01/05/19
- new switchable overlays: paths + tracks (city), marking of permitted foot/cycle paths (hiking/cycling/mtb) - for countries where usage is forbidden by default or questionable
- added transformation of bridleways to paths/cycleways if using by foot/bike is legal (hiking/cycling/mtb), transformation of paths with bicycle=yes AND mtb:scale=1+ or sac_scale=T2+ to cycleways but with red dashes (cycling), ft_permit and ft_destination to other positive foot-rules
- changed old network=mtb to newer network_mtb=lay_mtb, MTB: leisure=track with mtb:scale is now rendered like MTB trails, emphasized access=no pattern
There's an update of Elevate 4. The option to emphasize paved cycleways/footways (Cycling/City) and show paved tracks in ZL12 was added, as well as the rendering of aboriginal lands.
All changes:
4.3.1 12/06/19
- added emphasized paved cycleways resp. footpaths (cycling/city), tracktype=grade1 to ZL12 in Elevate, boundary=aboriginal_lands
- changed pipeline caption size
- small fixes
There's a minor update for Elevate 4. There was in fix for NL/BE hiking nodes in the latest maps, and the map styles had to be changed for this, too. Also there is a new option to mark easy hiking paths in MTB map style.
4.3.2 08/07/19
- changed hiking nodes caption from name to addr:housenumber for maps with new tag-mapping, zoom-min for admin_level=4
- added option to show sac_scale=T1/hiking on paths without bicycle=* (may no be allowed to use by bike in certain countries)
Elevate has been updated. Some new map features are now rendered, and surface is now shown all the time in hiking/cycling/mtb map styles. Also if map background is turned off in city map style, bodies of water will still be shown.
All changes:
4.3.3 26/09/19
- added surface rendering for all tracks in hiking/cycling/mtb (as tracktype isn't always consistent with surface), tourism=artwork, natural=earth_bank, natural=gully, barrier=ditch, closed=yes for man_made=groyne
- changed map background option for city - bodies of water will now show, optimized landcover rendering for multipolygons with missing inners, changed zoom level for river captions, changed footway/path areas (rendering depends now on surface), restricted generator:source to power=generator
- fixed missing casings for some tracks at ZL13, improved spanish translations
I released a new Elevate version. This is now optimized for mapsforge 0.12 and higher (at least 0.6.1), as the OruxMaps version which uses 0.12 is still in beta phase (now beta35!), the optimizations for the curved texts are currently only usable in the beta version.
All changes:
4.4.0 15/04/20
- changed to rendertheme V5 and removed deprecated tags, so now at least mapsforge 0.6.1 is necessary
- optimized all pathtexts for mapsforge 0.12 rendering (esp. route refs and street names, increased tiny font sizes), optimized oneway symbols
- added man_made=petroleum_well, attraction=summer_toboggan, priority to playground, rendering for strict nature reserves (protect_class=1), rendering of protect_class=2/3/4 for maps starting 03/2020
- changed rendering for buildings=ruins/buildings with historic=ruins, removed symbol for ruins when they are just buildings=ruins
- removed some unnecessary slashes in waymarks ressource links, small fix for hike_node/housenumbers, code cleaned of Locus Engine optimizations
The current Elevate version 4.4.0 is optimized for Mapsforge 0.12 and higher, which now supports curved path texts. E.g. contourline captions, street names and route refs use this. But this kind of rendering doesn't work so well in older Mapsforge versions, e.g. all current non-beta releases of OruxMaps. OruxMaps Beta uses Mapsforge 0.12 since 6 months, but it's a really long beta period, so still no final release. I wanted to release Elevate 4.4.0 after the beta phase is finished, so there was a long time only a release candidate for Elevate 4.4.0. But now there were too many changes in the maps that it was time to release it. Especially the data in the maps for protected areas changed, so users complained that Elevate 4.3.3.1 wouldn't show those anymore.
But there is still no end in sight for the OruxMaps beta phase (and maybe other apps still use an older Mapsforge version). So I decided to update Elevate 4.3.3.1 to 4.3.3.2 and release it as a legacy version. The only change is compatibility for protected areas with maps from 03/2020 or newer.

Hello!
I will shortly update the version available for the mapsforge 0.13 libraries, in addition to correcting a couple of things.
The current beta will take a few more weeks, it is giving me more war than expected. I have already upgraded beta version to mapsforge 0.13

I just got the update for 7.5.10 GP. Will there also be an update for the free 7.4.22 with mapsforge 0.13?
There's an new Elevate version available, most important a bug concerning the display of cycle route references has been fixed.
All changes:
4.4.1 07/07/20
- fixed cycle route refs
- changed route ref captions, border color for tracks, highway=service
- added refs for guideposts in waymarks overlay, waymark colors for long distance routes at zoom 9-12
A new update of Elevate is available. Many small things that have been added to the maps are now visible, and it's also possible now to switch off that paths which are allowed for cycling are rendered like cycleways.
All changes:
4.4.2 26/09/20
- added barrier=log, barrier=hedge, highway=elevator, ref for railway=platform_edge/platform, amenity=townhall, protect_class=5/11 with access=no, hiking route refs for routes with waymarks colors, added/changed rendering for (special) buildings, different rendering for minor service roads, option to disable rendering of paths with cycling permitted like cycle ways (Cycling), highway=services
- changed rendering of highway=service, rendering for protected areas (replaced access=no pattern with strict nature reserve)
- fixed error in permitted cycle paths option
New year, new Elevate. For all upcoming maps starting from January this one is needed, as the tags in the maps for protected areas have changed (and doesn't work with older maps).
All Changes:
4.4.3 06/01/21
– changed protected areas including new protect_class values (starting with maps January 2021)
– added blue line for paths with cycling permitted when option render like cycle ways is disabled (like in hiking), special rendering for natural/landuse areas with bridge=yes
– fixed cycleway lanes/tracks (now only shown in cycling)
Hi Eartrumpet & Orux
Thanks for your work : "orux + openandromaps + elevate" is just amazing !
Here is a feedback on mountain trails.
When hiking in the mountains, I keep a close look on trail difficulty, to avoid sac T5 without proper equipment for example.
In the current Elevate, the colors are confusing for me, and high-difficulty trails appear in black, and may be overlooked or confused with other marks, while they could be dangerous.
So I thought of using a green-blue-orange-red colormap for sac, but the green was getting confused with many other marks, so I converged to:
T1=black (easy), T2=blue (ok), T3=orange (hard), T4=red (dangerous/alpinism), T5=pink, and T6=purple (this one is very rare)
The visibility modifies the dash/dots, and the unrated sac are light gray.
For this, I modified manually the xml so I probably crashed a few other close legends such as tracks and horse tracks...
Is there a "simple" way / software to edit the stylesheet ?
Here is a comparison of Elevate and the modification, where I find the visibility more satisfactory for my usage.

Elevate has been updated. There was a tiny error (two spaces were missing) that let to bad rendering in just a few apps, and MTB:scale and MTB:scale:uphill are now shown on steps.
4.4.5 06/03/21
- added mtb:scale and mtb:scale:uphill to highway=steps in MTB-mapstyle
- fixed error in cliffs

For me black is fine, as black is in our parts of the alps the color for dangerous paths (or ski pistes etc.). I use these colors as they are used on the guideposts (here's an example (https://www.schilder-werbetechnik.de/media/images/info/Schild-rehtsweisend-Alpen.jpg)), so for those familiar with the eastern alps these colors are really self-evident. But when other colors work better for you, great. I just can't provide different versions for all different colors people are used to in other parts of the world.
QuoteIs there a "simple" way / software to edit the stylesheet ?
No, just a usual text editor. Look at this thread in German for hints etc.:
https://www.openandromaps.org/oam-forums/topic/grundorientierung
With the new Elevate 4.5, there are lots of changes to the displayed POI symbols and captions. There are now more colors which depend on categories that are identical to the POI options. The categories have been resorted and all symbols have a more unified look. Also the mapstyle options now have category letters (R=Route, W=Ways, P=POIs, A=Areas). That all those changed symbols can be displayed at all I've renamed the symbol folder from ele_res to ele-res - the old one can be safely deleted.
Also lots of new POIs have been added some other changes:
4.5.0 21/04/21
- many changes in POI symbols - new colors, remodeled categories, unified symbols, reworked many symbols, category letters for mapstyle options (R=Route, W=Ways, P=POIs, A=Areas)
- restructured POI categories
- added minor contour lines in cycling for ZL13/14, some access additions, historic=stone, shop=farm, man_made=wastewater_plant, man_made=water_works, amenity=ice_cream, sport=cliff_diving, sport=free_flying, sport=climbing_adventure, sport=roller_skating, sport=skateboard, sport=miniature_golf
- changed aerial ways rendering, removed workaround for missing building tags, removed symbol for water_well/drinking (now same as drinking_water)
Elevate has been updated with some small additions/changes.
4.5.2 14/10/21
- optimized drag_lift and chair_lift symbols, changed rendering of path/footway areas, natural=tree_row
- added rendering for closed highway=pedestrian ways, highway=construction as area, cutting=yes, hillshading (for apps that support it), waymarks: white background when background is missing
Elevate 5.0 has been released. The main changes are there to match the new v5 generations of OpenAndroMaps, which need mapsforge maps V5 support in the apps. Therefore the 5.0 version in Elevate, too.
The new version works in most parts with the older V4 maps, but it is not recommended.
All changes:
5.0 05/12/21
- made for next OAM map generation based on mapsforge maps V5, starting December 2021
- new routes and separate route refs: hknetwork=own, network=ocn, mtbnetwork=omn, ref_hike/rec_cycle/ref_mtb
- better waymarks support: OSMC waycolors orange/brown/gray, lots of additional, new OSMC foreground/backgrounds, changed rendering of OSMC waycolors
- changed symbols fee=yes symbols for parking and toilets, removed obsolete uwn/ucn networks
- added building=greenhouse
Elevate has been updated to 5.1 including several new map features and changes to low zoom rendering of emphasized paved cycle ways and colored waymarks routes.
5.1 07/06/22
– added: tracktype=grade1 to emphasized paved ways options, low zoom emphasized paved cycle ways rendering (cycling), man_made=breakwater, amenity=bicycle_repair_station, amenity=public_bookcase
– changed rendering of: man_made=groyne, waterway=weir, low zoom waymarks colored routes (hiking)
– removed: mtbnetwork=umn (MTB)
There's a new Elevate version available. The biggest change is that crags from OS data are now rendered for UK maps. But other countries get several new features, too.
All changes:
5.2 06/11/22
- added crags for UK maps, smaller symbols for parking lane/street side, amenity=parking_entrance, natural=sinkhole, natural=crater for nodes, highway=busway, names for various landuses to all map styles, mtb_role=forward/backward, landuse=plant_nursery, barrier=toll_booth, railway=train_station_entrance, railway=subway_entrance
- changed areas of touristic attractions, walls, parking zoom levels, non-route refs for smaller highways
I've been using Elevate for a bunch of years now for hiking in Oruxmaps and I always appreciate the work that goes into this and andromaps.
Admittedly, i've been using "Elevate L" for a while simply because i can see more hiking trail names at a lower zoom level. I've just upgraded to Elevate 5, so thought I should ask if the L version is no longer maintained as I suspect? If so, is there a way I can get similar results in the standard, maintained version? I tried messing with the scaling settings of the mapsforge section of Oruxmaps, but didn't seem to have an effect on what I wanted. It's not a big deal, but would be nice to know if there's a quick fix, so I can drop the old variants.
Thanks

The size variants have been discontinued with Elevate 4 in 2016, so quite a while ago (a bit longer in Elevate 2 legacy version). They were meant for apps which didn't scale maps for high pixel density displays, but modern apps like current OruxMaps scale this automatically. So I'm not quite sure which effect you are after, as this would be a different then the intended one with Elevate L (which was just to display the map content the same on devices with ~320ppi as with ~160ppi).
You wrote "more hiking trail names at a lower zoom level" - more names usually can only displayed if they are smaller, so they don't overlap and cancel each other. So to display more names, you should use Settings > Maps > Mapsforge settings > Mapsforge text size with a factor <1. But I'm not sure that's what you intend, as in "L" the text size used to be larger and therefore lesse names that can be rendered.
If you meant to display trail names earlier/in lower zoom levels at all, you should use Elements theme (which is made for sparsely populated/mapped areas or countries).
Best regards,
Tobias
QuoteIf you meant to display trail names earlier/in lower zoom levels at all
Yeah, that's what i was after.
I've been restricting Elements use for times when i need all the elements available displayed on screen vs just the required ones when hiking (so as to not clutter my map), but i'll play with it and the text scales more and see if i get a better balance. Like i said, not a big deal at all.
Thanks for the reply!

Excuse me for a tangential quesion but I have new phone(Samsung), new android OS version(10), new version of Oruxmaps GP(10.1.1 GP), new version of Colorado Topo map (2023-05-06), and consequently have navigational problems in the app! I can find where store the Mapsforge or renderthermes (SD card) but cannot find where to SELECT the different render themes. I used to use Map icon/Map tweaks/Maps forge theme/<Default, Elements or Elevate> but in v10.1.1 Map icon only gives map selection.
I actually did stumble across a way to choose the theme, but can't believe it's the only way to select theme....I used the older version of the app to determine what the icon is for "Mapsforge theme" and added that icon to the map screen. Is the a more straightforward way to select Mapsforge theme???
Hello nahannidog,
do you use the "classical" user interface or the unified interface?
With the classical interface, the way you described still works (for me):
map symbol (top button bar) - map tweaks - mapsforge theme -> possibility to choose theme
or
left menu - mapsforge theme -> possibility to choose theme
With the unified interface:
left menu - mapsforge maps -> under map style you see all your installed themes
Best regards

Problems Elevate with Orux10.0.x GP with VTM (Rotating labels in vector: maps-Settings - Maps- Mapsforge settings - VTM map viewer'): without VTM viewer Oruxmaps works perfectly with OpenAndroMaps and "Elevate" (last version 5.2) that I can configure (mtb, city, walking,...).
However if I activate VTM viewer I can not change the theme or configure it (it works with last theme and setting I used without VTM viewer)!
Clearing the cache doesn't fix anything :-\ VTM viewer is very nice and it's a pity not to use it......x...
I got non solution from Orux..
Ps: the same thing with previus 9.7beta18 as described
https://oruxmaps.org/forum/index.php?topic=41039.msg55130#msg55130
Sounds like an OruxMaps issue, as the map menus work well with other apps that use VTM. Although Elevate is best used with mspsforge, as it uses rendering styles/rules that are not available in VTM.
Hi Eartrumpet, thanks for the prompt reply.. which is exactly what I was afraid of!
I will continue without VTM as the Elevate theme with its configurability is really indispensable for me!
...and thanks again for your great work! ;D
Elevate_Winter on OruxMaps AM
Good morning, I have both OruxMaps GP on my smartphone and OruxMaps AM on my Windows 11 PC purchased with Amazon Appstore.
The Elevate 5.3.1 theme shows the altitude contour lines but the ski slopes appear in light blue, almost invisible. With the default theme the ski slopes appear colored according to the difficulty "easy", "intermediate", "advanced", etc. , but the level curves disappear.
On this site I found the theme "Elevate_Winter":
https://www.senotto.de/Tipps_Tricks/GPS/OAM_Winter/OAM_Winter.html
which has both contour lines and colored ski slopes.
On the smartphone with OruxMaps GP I managed to install the "Elevate_Winter" theme, however on the Windows 11 PC with OruxMaps AM I couldn't find the folder where to insert the "Elevate_Winter.xml" file and its "ele-res" folder, so it doesn't work .
I ask if it is possible that in the future the "Elevate_Winter" theme will be made official so that it can also be installed on the Windows 11 PC with OruxMaps AM.
Thank you
George

You should ask the creator of the fork if it's possible to get a proper installation file for Windows.
For your second question: I don't intend to include a Winter mapstyle because of various reasons, all have been discussed in the OpenAndroMaps forum.
Hi GeorgeF, you say " ..however on the Windows 11 PC with OruxMaps AM I couldn't find the folder where to insert the "Elevate_Winter.xml" file and its "ele-res" folder, so it doesn't work.. "
You can find the solution here
https://oruxmaps.org/forum/index.php?topic=43118.msg56913#msg56913 reply by Lenz (very clear, thanks!)
That is Orux runs in a virtual machine called WSA on your pc and you have to share files between Windows and Android (WSA).
Nothing, today I tried again to repurchase this OruxMaps AM app. I didn't succeed.
I started from scratch, also reinstalled Amazon Appstore, I started again from this app on Windows 11:
Start – all apps - Amazon Appstore:
I don't understand where the problem is, I had already tried a few days ago, it's a continuous loop with no exit. I have to give up.
Now I'm using Garmin BaseCamp on windows 11
Anyway, thanks for the replies.

A new Elevate version has been released which brings mainly the rendering of new map content.
5.5 17/11/24
- added highway=passing_place, amenity=lounger, added ebike_charging_commercial/ebike_charging_station/ebike_charging_public/ebike_charging_customer, barrier=cattle_grid, highway=ladder
- fixed summer_toboggan captions, changed mini_roundabouts, changed zoom-min for bays
