Title: Using both online and offline maps in multi-layer definition
Post by: steed on February 27, 2015, 01:11:08 PM
Hi Orux,

When defining composite (multilayer) maps in the app, only on-line sources are available.

Can you also add the ability to choose from the available off-line maps?

It would be very useful to combine off-line and off-line maps/overlays, or even combine multiple off-line maps into a composite (multilayer) map.

Thanks!

It has been already asked in the past. The problem is mixing different projections.

What about supporting only offline maps with compatible projections?

Let's think of the following scenario:
  • I've created a composite map out of several online sources
  • I've used OruxMaps "Map" - "Create" button to create offline copies of each of the sources of the composite map
  • However, I cannot have an offline copy of the composite map

Also consider the following situation: The map I'm creating is available as an online source, part of OruxMaps default map list, and as an offline map created with MOBAC. Both are using the same projection. Users are asking for additional flavors of the map, for example, one for hiking and another for MTB.

Ideally, I should be able to publish a base map and 2 overlay maps. This would work fine for the online sources, but for offline I would need to create the 4 composite maps - one for each possible choice of the overlay layers [None, Hiking, MTB, Hiking+MTB].

The overlay maps are significantly smaller in size, yet each of the 4 offline composite maps is full size, just like the base map. Clearly things get worse if additional overlay layers are needed.

I hope the above examples show the value of providing a solution for simpler situations which may be more common.

Thanks!

I don't know, I only reported what Orux expressed before (//http). Maybe he's afraid that if you add a feature that only works for some maps people may get confused.

Thanks! I appreciate the reference to the discussion from 2 years ago. It seems like several people were looking for such a feature back then.

It seems like the issue with re-projection can be avoided by allowing access to offline maps that do not need re-projection, instead of blocking access to all offline maps.

Yes, I would love combining different .mbtiles!

- baselayer

- CEMT overlay

- seamark overlay

online example: http://maps.grade.de/

offline mbtiles: http://kap.grade.de/inland-chart-ol2.html

Thanks, Dirk

Look at the latest beta, it is starting to be implemented.
