Since GPS information is very inaccurate for elevation, it would be nice to make more use of the DEM data.
Afaik it is only used for map shading and to display elevation height under the cursor.
Imho it would be especially useful for slope calculations and for tracking elevation gain/loss calculations which are both far off using GPS.
