License check disables the app?

I am a long time user of oruxmaps. I have used it as my primary navigation aid for years, and I have often recommended it to others.

I have been using the app without google play (and gms/gsf) enabled. For previous versions, it was possible to install or upgrade the app with google play enabled and then later disable these services. But, for the latest versions, the license check apparently happens at every app startup. This makes the app unusable without google-services installed with a user logged in. The license check sometimes also seems to require an active network connection.

For me this is a mountain saftey issue. I cant rely on an app for navigation if some random license-failure disables my primary map!

Are there any plans to fix this?

Hello, do you have it happen to you on a Samsung ?  I only know of two other cases with this report, and both are Samsung.
It doesn't happen to me with any of my three LG , oppo , xiaomi devices
I have tried it on several occasions and for the mtb I don't use a card or have data
Best regards

Hello jdgraz, on the my Samsung (with android 13) the same problem as indicated:
https://oruxmaps.org/forum/index.php?topic=44558.msg58841#msg58841

My GooglePlay is always on, but without network connection sometimes the application does not start.
I would point out that once the connection is restored it starts regularly and even if I remove the connection the app still works.
This happens sporadically.
Clearing the application cache solves the problem for a day or a week o....
My small solution: start the app (even without gps and tracking) in a place with a connection and then deactivate it. Then all day in the mountains in the company of Oruxmaps  8)

Hi!

Yes, for me it's on a Samsung device (S20). Normally this shouldn't be vendor-dependent, but you never know.. I'm not sure how the google-libraries are versioned across Android-versions, but that could be a factor. I tried another paid app on the same device; this app works fine without google play and an active network connection (as did oruxmaps a few minor-versions ago). This is why I believe that a change in the way oruxmaps handles its license check is the cause.

I could try the trick of starting the app with an active network connection and an account signed in, but I'm often outside mobile coverage for several days (and that's when you really need the map!)

(Ideally I would like some kind of offline-license that would work without the google/amazon/huawei-libraries.)

Hello,

I to have used Oruxmaps for a while (free version) but have just paid for the play store version and just found that I need to be logged into my google account and connected for the app to run.  I tried the clear cache trick and although I was not prompted to login to google account I have a message from Orux "something went wrong" check that google play is enabled on your device and that you're using an up to date version before opening the app.

I am on Motorola edge 50 Android 14 and I hate to be logged into google any longer than necessary.  So if there is going to be a solution to use it truly off line like the free version I would be very happy.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi, another little trick I am using in these months where if the problem we are talking about occurred: install and use the Beta version.
It does not go through google play and therefore has no license check and so it always starts, even without a connection.
Beta and GP share maps, tracks, dem and so the increase in space occupied is modest.

Sub optimal solution while waiting for OruxGp to come back as it did months ago..

Not to me what seems strange to me, that I only know the case in Samsung devices.
Something similar happens with Amazon oruxmaps, but I think that in all brands, not just Samsung.

Tried clearing the app cache for both Google Play and Google Services - seems like it did the trick for my device! THanks for all the suggestions!

btw - excellent app for both planning and tracking!

Edit: oops too early. After some use, the app is disabled again. "Something went wrong. Check that Google Play is enabled ... "

One more reason (if needed...) to regret time of free version...
This version was not an obstacle to make donations, that could be even more important than the "official" price on Google.

But now, we are dependent on Google (that already kept for him a large part of payment, while donation of free version was 100% in Jose's pocket)

A version of OruxMaps GP in apk, subscription. Whether it's with the already paid Google play account or through a new purchase it would be the best in my opinion.
In fact, I would pay again for an OruxMaps GP apk at the same height of the play store
