Is there a way to control how often labels show up. For example can I restrict a contour label to show up just once per display view?

I don't know what maps you are using, but I'd say no in general.

I'm using vector maps that I've created if it makes a difference.

If it's mapsforge you can't. If it's garmin I don't know,  maybe at creation time,  I don't see any option for that in  oruxmaps.
