In the track statistics I can plot "speed (2)" which seems to be about one third of the "speed (km/h)". What is this "speed (2)" and what is its unit?

There are two speeds:
The default, calculated using the Track points and the timestamps.
The speed (2) provided by the GPS.

The units should be the same.

@orux

it seems that it is not the case. In my case 'Settings - Units - Speed' is set to km/h but still Speed (2) is displaying results in m/s

This is exactly, what I see (9.4.0beta6)

In v.9.7.0beta4 this has been fixed. Both speeds now use km/h.

(Just a remark: Now if you plot speed and speed (2) in the same plot, they still use different scales in the y-direction.)
