Dear Oruxmaps-team and users!

I want to tell you, that I've created several Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), which are based on precise Opendata LiDAR-elevation data of the country's Geographical Institutes.You can find all infos and download links on the following Website:

The improvements in accuracy, quality and fine details of my model's elevations compared to those of the popular SRTM-datasets are enormous. Especially in mountainous terrain.

You can use these new DTMs to create improved, more accurate contour lines in maps. Or you can copy the files for the area of your interest into the correct folder of Locus to improve dynamic elavation values and the shading of the maps in these areas.

Some annotations:



- Just download the 1"-sec versions of the DTMs (or if you have little available memory on your phone: 3"-sec).

Not the 20m and 50m-versions, Oruxmaps can not use them.



- Copy the .hgt-files into oruxmaps/dem folder of Oruxmaps.



- If there are already equal named files in this directory, just overwrite them (they have been automatically downloaded by Oruxmaps before and are based on less accurate SRTM-data)



- You don't have to copy each .hgt-file of a country, just for the areas you are interested in.

Each elevation file (.hgt) represends exactly 1° x 1°, which could automatically derived from the filename. The filename specifies the southwest corner, e.g. "N47E014.hgt" represends an area from N47° to N48° latitude and E14° to E15° longitude.

Now the new OpenAndroMaps of Spain using these LiDAR Terrain Models are available. The improvements in quality and detail of contour lines and shading are really great. I've posted screenshots of 2 locations on Tenerife, Canary Islands where you can see these improvements.

Dear All, first thank you a lot for uploading those files, I have downloaded the files and then I created a map based on this files...but the data are not so precise. I have checked the LIDAR map on the Slovenian website and there you can really see every single hole on the Earth.



What should I do to have similar pictures?

Hi, well the original data of Slovenia has a horizontal resolution of 1 m, where you indeed could see every tiny hole (which by the the way in most cases are just disruptions during the LIDAR-process and just havent been smoothed by the Slovenian office.



The horizontal resolution of my derived DTM for the use within Orux (the 1"-version) is about 20x30 m, which is also still quite crispy, and very good to create contour lines for hiking maps or shading of maps. The point is: they are dramtically "sharper" and more accurate compared to the alternative 1" (or 3") - SRTM terrain tiles of Slovenia.

Tell me the coordinates or the town where you made your screenshot, and I'll make another screenshot using the online data to compare quality of horizontal/vertical resolultion.

I didnt know where the openandromaps contourlines came from, Now  I know.... and yes ,  there is a great difference

It's not to criticize, since I'm using the same datasets, but France is not that precise. I mean, data in itself is (usually but not always) good but we are talking about a 75m grid in Lambert projection that needs quite a bit of interpolation to be used in OM. Also the Nice Cote d'Azur dataset while formally 5m is actually uspsized from a much lower resolution. Still, it was nice for a moment to believe that the IGN had released their BDALTI5 as OpenData... :-)

Hi Maki,



You're right, due to the lack of more detailled opendata DTMs of France I had to use the most detailled data which is available for free in a specific region. For most parts of France that's the IGN 75 m model. But especially the Alps and the Pyrenees are better in details, cause I was able to use finer source data there.



The interpolation and downsampling of the 75m-DTM hardly influences the final results . Since all of my datasets have a minimal resolution of 20m or 1" of course I had to upsample the 5m- Cote-d'Azur grid. Who's interested in more detailed source data could download the original 5m- DTM of Cote-d'Azur.

1"-DTMs are more than enogh in detail level for Hiking maps, even in high alpine countries like Austria, Switzerland or the French and Italian alps.



So all in all, I would be glad myself if IGN France would provide better sourcedata for free, ideal would be 20m or finer Lidar data. But in the moment I'm sure you'll find no better 1"-Opendata Models of France than those offered here.  ;)
